NEW DELHI – The Centre has taken over the 53-acre premises of the Delhi Race Club, initiating demolition activities on August 27, 2026. This move follows the Patiala House Court's rejection of the club's plea for an interim stay against the government's takeover.
Demolition Underway at Historic Venue
Bulldozers moved into the nearly century-old Delhi Race Club complex on Thursday morning, immediately commencing demolition work. Among the structures reportedly pulled down were horse stables, the bookmaker ring, and the winning post. A facility associated with the photo-finish system was also impacted during the operation.
The takeover marks a significant turning point for the historic club, which has hosted horse racing events for decades and is a prominent part of Delhi's sporting heritage.
Court Rejects Club's Plea
The Centre's action followed a legal setback for the Delhi Race Club. On August 25, the Patiala House Court declined to grant an interim stay on the government's possession efforts. With the court's decision, authorities proceeded with the takeover and subsequent demolition.
Eviction Order Issued Earlier
The process to reclaim the property began earlier, with an eviction order issued on August 11 by the estate officer. This order was issued under the Public Premises (Eviction of Unauthorised Occupants) Act, asserting the land was under unauthorised occupation.
The 53-acre property, strategically located near Lok Kalyan Marg in Lutyens’ Delhi, has now been formally handed over to the Land and Development Office, which operates under the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.
