Automotive giant Stellantis has finalized a definitive agreement with Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles (TMPV) and its electric vehicle subsidiary, Tata Passenger Electric Mobility, to utilize their advanced vehicle architecture and product technology. This collaboration aims to develop new vehicles destined for more than 50 international markets.
Manufacturing Hub in India
The new vehicles will be manufactured in India at Fiat India Automobiles Pvt Ltd (FIA), a 50:50 joint venture between the automakers located in Ranjangaon, Pune. This strategic move is set to significantly broaden the international footprint of Tata Motors' engineering capabilities and bolster India's position as a crucial global production and development center.
The partnership is designed to harness India's competitive engineering strengths and manufacturing scale, accelerating both companies' export ambitions. Stellantis, known for its extensive portfolio of 14 brands including Jeep, Peugeot, Fiat, Citroën, Opel, and Maserati, operates in India primarily through Citroën and Jeep.
“Combined with Tata Motors’ technological capabilities, this creates a strong foundation for developing and manufacturing vehicles in India for markets worldwide,” a joint statement from the companies read.
Strategic Partnership Evolution
Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director & CEO of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, emphasized the long-standing relationship between the two automotive powerhouses. “Tata Motors’ partnership with Stellantis has grown steadily over two decades, and this agreement marks an important next step,” Chandra stated. “Together, we have an exciting opportunity to combine our respective strengths to create compelling vehicles engineered and made in India for customers in India and around the world.”
Tianshu Xin, Chief Operating Officer for Stellantis Asia-Pacific Region, highlighted the strategic importance of such alliances. “Partnerships are central to how Stellantis creates value across Asia-Pacific. By combining Tata Motors’ strong capabilities in India with Stellantis’ global product development and market reach, this agreement will help us develop competitive vehicles in India and expand our export potential across international markets,” Xin explained.
This definitive agreement follows a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in February 2026, which explored avenues for collaboration in manufacturing, engineering, and supply chains both within India and abroad. The development also comes shortly after Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles’ engineering arm, Tata Technologies, secured a deal with Japan’s Honda to develop a new sub-four-meter vehicle for the Indian market, further showcasing India's growing prominence in automotive engineering.
