Global brokerage firm Citi has projected a significant 33% upside for Tata Capital shares, assigning a price target of ₹450 to the non-banking financial company (NBFC) stock. This optimistic outlook comes despite the stock slipping by 3% to ₹327.05 in recent trading sessions, amid broader market weakness.
Strong Growth Momentum Fuels Optimism
Citi's positive stance is underpinned by Tata Capital's robust growth momentum, which has been consistently strong since the first quarter. This growth spans across key segments including retail, housing, small and medium-sized enterprises (SME), and corporate loans. Management has expressed confidence in achieving its stated guidance, reinforcing the brokerage's positive assessment.
Stable Asset Quality and Profitability Outlook
The NBFC's asset quality remains stable, with Citi noting no significant signs of stress despite prevailing geopolitical uncertainties and commodity price volatility. Furthermore, Tata Capital's management is confident that the return on assets (RoA) will remain within its guided range of 2.5% to 2.7% for the financial year 2028, signaling a stable profitability outlook.
Navigating Regulatory Overhangs
While the outlook is largely positive, Citi has also flagged two regulatory overhangs that could influence the financial sector:
- The Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) revolving-credit framework.
- The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India's (IRDAI) insurance commission proposals.
Citi's note, while not quantifying the impact, highlights these as unresolved issues. For a diversified lender like Tata Capital, the insurance exposure primarily affects cross-sell fee income rather than the core lending spread, potentially limiting the scale of any adverse impact compared to a pure distributor.
As a relatively newly listed lender, Tata Capital's initial quarterly results carry particular weight, providing crucial data points against which market expectations can be set. Clarity on these regulatory items and consistent RoA performance against the guided band will be key factors in moving from guidance to a confirmed track record.
