Ahead of the high-profile BRICS Summit in Delhi, Sberbank CEO Herman Gref articulated a vision for substantial engagement in India, identifying significant opportunities across financial services, technology, infrastructure, and trade. The Russian banking giant is committed to strengthening its role in supporting businesses from both India and Russia.
Gref emphasized the bank's top priority: developing first-class infrastructure for both Russian and Indian corporations and individuals. This initiative is designed to create new avenues for investment and trade between the two countries, underscoring a period of immense opportunity to deepen commercial ties.
Boosting India-Russia Trade and Financial Infrastructure
Sberbank has already expanded its presence in India, becoming a pivotal facilitator of financial transactions between Indian and Russian enterprises. Gref noted that Sberbank anticipates serving over 15% of the bilateral trade between the two nations this year. He highlighted the remarkable progress in financial transaction efficiency:
"If a few years before it was a lot of difficulties, now the transactions, the financial transactions between the countries, we can do in few minutes. And if you look at our branch here, it's the biggest financial institution for the Russian-Indian business relations."
India and Russia have been pioneers in establishing robust financial infrastructure to support their bilateral trade, a development Gref described as creating "very convenient infrastructure" for financial services.
Technology and Investment Initiatives
Beyond traditional banking, Sberbank plans a significant technology push. Gref stated the bank's ambition to build a comprehensive platform for businesses in India and Russia, integrating both financial and technological services. As a major technological company in Russia, Sberbank intends to bring advanced tech solutions to enhance business convenience on both sides.
Infrastructure remains a core focus, with Sberbank prioritizing its development for corporations and individuals in both nations. The bank has also initiated investment flows in the reverse direction, launching a successful instrument this year that allows Russian individual investors to participate in the Indian stock market.
Expanding Indian Exports and Future Partnerships
Sberbank is actively working to boost Indian exports to Russia by identifying suitable products and services and assisting Indian companies in expanding into the Russian market. Gref expressed optimism about numerous opportunities across various sectors and the bank's readiness to support these companies.
Looking ahead 2-3 years, Sberbank's third priority involves building bridges and extending financial support for Russian companies planning to invest and establish businesses in India. Gref also indicated Sberbank's interest in forming technological partnerships with Indian entities, aiming to bring its transactional services, online healthcare, and educational services from the Russian market to India.
