BPCL Plots Energy Transition: From Hydrocarbons to Green Hydrogen & Renewables

· · 2 min read

Bharat Petroleum (BPCL) is actively diversifying its energy portfolio, shifting from a pure fossil-fuel processor to an integrated energy hub. The company targets net-zero Scope 1 & 2 emissions by 2040 and plans 10 GW of renewable capacity by 2035, embracing green hydrogen and biofuels.

Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), a major oil marketing company, is strategically reorienting its operations to embrace the global energy transition. While maintaining its focus on traditional hydrocarbon assets, BPCL is making significant investments in new energy applications, aiming to evolve into an integrated energy hub.

Balancing Conventional and New Energy

Amidst a volatile geopolitical landscape and evolving policy frameworks, BPCL is balancing its investment strategy between conventional crude refining and upstream operations, and the expansion of its new energy businesses. This includes prioritising growth in renewables, green hydrogen, biofuels, and electric mobility solutions.

VRK Gupta, Director Finance at BPCL, highlighted that this strategic direction aligns with India's national priorities, such as promoting clean energy growth, increasing ethanol blending, fostering a gas-based economy, and achieving long-term net-zero targets. The company emphasizes securing supply through diversified sourcing and robust risk controls, leveraging its integrated presence across refining, gas, and renewable energy sectors.

Ambitious Net-Zero and Renewable Energy Goals

BPCL has set an ambitious target to achieve net-zero emissions for Scope 1 and Scope 2 by 2040. To meet this goal, the company plans a multi-pronged approach, including significant energy efficiency measures, a substantial expansion of its renewable energy portfolio, the development of green hydrogen capabilities, and a broader adoption of biofuels and other low-carbon alternatives.

The company aims to build 10 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2035. Currently, BPCL operates over 250 MW of renewable assets, with an additional 100 MW under development through various solar and wind projects. These efforts are complemented by ongoing initiatives to reduce emissions through energy conservation.

Innovation in Clean Energy Initiatives

BPCL is pioneering several industry-first initiatives to facilitate its energy transition. These include the deployment of green hydrogen production, compressed bio-gas (CBG) facilities, and integrated bio-ethanol plants. Furthermore, the company is actively enhancing its renewable energy portfolio, promoting clean mobility solutions, developing energy-efficient cooking stoves, and exploring waste plastic road technologies as part of its comprehensive roadmap towards a sustainable future.
