The Bar Council of India (BCI) has initiated an inquiry into the professional standing of former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, following her appearance in advocate robes at the Calcutta High Court. The BCI has formally requested the Bar Council of West Bengal to provide comprehensive details regarding her enrolment and current practice status.
BCI Seeks Urgent Clarity
In a letter dated May 14, 2026, the BCI asked for information to be submitted within two days, by May 16. The specific details requested include Banerjee's enrolment number, the date of her enrolment, confirmation of whether her name remains on the State Roll of Advocates, and any records indicating voluntary suspension or cessation of her practice during her tenure as Chief Minister. The BCI also inquired about the existence of any valid certificate of practice or practice-status record.
The BCI emphasized that its rules stipulate standards of professional conduct and etiquette, including the mandatory dress code for advocates appearing before various courts and tribunals. The inquiry aims to verify the factual status of her enrolment, practice, and any suspensions or resumptions, without prejudging the permissibility of her recent court appearance.
Mamata Banerjee's Court Appearance
Mamata Banerjee appeared before a division bench of Chief Justice Sujoy Paul and Justice Parthasarathi Sen at the Calcutta High Court on Thursday, May 14, 2026. Clad in a lawyer's gown, she was present to argue a public interest litigation (PIL) concerning alleged post-poll violence and attacks on Trinamool Congress (TMC) party offices following the 2026 Assembly election results.
The PIL, filed by advocate Shirshanya Bandyopadhyay on behalf of the TMC, alleged that several party leaders and workers were forced to flee their homes and faced attacks due to their political affiliation after the election results were declared. The petition was initially filed on May 12.
Chaotic Scenes Outside Court
The court appearance was not without incident. As Banerjee attempted to leave the courthouse, she was met with chaotic scenes and slogans of "thief" from a section of lawyers. Senior TMC leader Kalyan Banerjee alleged that lawyers influenced by the BJP attempted to heckle the former Chief Minister, making it difficult for her legal team to escort her out safely.
