Key Financial Changes to Watch in August 2026
As August 2026 begins, individuals and businesses across India should prepare for a series of significant financial and banking-related updates. These changes, ranging from tax deadlines to new credit card regulations and revised utility prices, will impact various aspects of personal and professional finances.
Income Tax Return Deadline for Businesses and Professionals
The Income Tax Department has set August 31, 2026, as the deadline for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for specific categories of taxpayers. This due date primarily applies to those filing ITR-3 and ITR-4 who are not subject to a tax audit. This includes self-employed professionals, freelancers, small business owners, and taxpayers utilizing presumptive taxation schemes under Sections 44AD and 44ADA of the Income Tax Act.
Failure to meet this deadline may result in a late filing fee of up to ₹5,000 under Section 234F, in addition to interest on any outstanding tax liability under Section 234A.
CKYC 2.0 Rollout Commences
A modernized Central Know Your Customer (CKYC) 2.0 framework is scheduled to begin its rollout from August 1. The primary goal of this revamped system is to streamline and expedite customer verification processes across various financial institutions.
Under CKYC 2.0, customers who have already completed their KYC verification will be able to reuse their existing records across participating institutions, provided they give consent. This innovation aims to reduce the need for customers to repeatedly submit the same documentation. Banks and insurance companies are expected to be the first to adopt the new framework, with mutual funds, stockbrokers, and other regulated entities gradually joining in subsequent phases.
Banks Announce Revised Service Charges
Several banks will implement revised service charges starting August 1. For instance, Ujjivan Small Finance Bank has announced adjustments to its SMS alert charges, which will now be ₹0.30 per message, subject to a monthly maximum. Customers are advised to review announcements from their respective banks regarding potential changes to debit card maintenance fees, account services, or other banking facilities, as these revisions can vary significantly between different lenders.
New Rules for Credit Card Users
Credit card customers may observe changes following the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) latest guidelines designed to enhance billing transparency. Under the updated framework, unpaid convenience fees, penalties, and taxes can no longer be factored into the calculation of finance charges on outstanding credit card balances. This change is anticipated to reduce borrowing costs for customers who carry a balance on their credit cards.
Additionally, some banks might revise their reward programs, annual fees, and other card-related charges throughout the month. Customers should review the updated terms and conditions issued by their credit card providers.
Revised Tatkal Ticket Booking Process
Effective August 1, Indian Railways will introduce a modified Tatkal ticket booking process at reservation counters. The new system will provide passengers with a token before they proceed with their booking. This aims to enable the entire booking process to be completed in a single visit, eliminating the need for passengers to return later after collecting a token. This initiative is designed to minimize waiting times and enhance the booking experience during periods of high demand.
LPG Prices to be Revised Monthly
Oil marketing companies are set to announce revised prices for domestic and commercial LPG cylinders on August 1, as part of their routine monthly price review. The new prices for brands such as Indane, Bharat Gas, and HP Gas will be influenced by international crude oil prices, global LPG benchmarks, and currency fluctuations. Since LPG rates can vary by city, consumers should verify the latest prices applicable to their specific location before booking a refill.
RBI Monetary Policy Decision on August 5
The Reserve Bank of India's Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) is scheduled to convene from August 3 to August 5, with its policy decision slated for announcement on August 5. The outcome of this meeting will be closely monitored by borrowers, depositors, and investors alike. Any adjustments to the repo rate or changes in the central bank's liquidity stance could directly influence home loan EMIs, broader lending rates, fixed deposit returns, and overall borrowing costs across the banking system.
