MP Teen Innovator Wins State Award for Water-Kerosene Hybrid Stove

A 16-year-old from Madhya Pradesh developed a hybrid stove using water and kerosene, reducing fuel use by 20% and earning a top state science award. This low-cost invention addresses common challenges in rural cooking.

Vyasji Mishra, a then 16-year-old student from Devsar, Madhya Pradesh, garnered significant recognition for his innovative hybrid stove design. His invention, which combines water and kerosene, significantly reduces fuel consumption and smoke emissions, earning him a prestigious state-level science prize.

How the Hybrid Stove Works

Mishra's device is essentially a hybrid kerosene-steam stove, ingeniously constructed by integrating two conventional kerosene stoves. The system incorporates three regulators: one to control kerosene flow, another for water, and a third to manage burner operation. It features two distinct tanks, one for kerosene and one for water, both connected to a shared burner. This design allows steam to facilitate the combustion process, making it more efficient.

Initial testing, further optimized by IIT Guwahati, estimated that the stove could achieve approximately 20 percent fuel savings compared to traditional kerosene stoves. The prototype was built at a modest cost of around ₹600, making it an accessible and affordable option for households reliant on kerosene for cooking.

A Young Inventor's Journey

Vyasji Mishra demonstrated an early interest in science and practical applications. Even before this breakthrough, he had participated in multiple science competitions, including developing a drip-irrigation system that secured first prize at a science exhibition in 2000. His elder brother provided assistance during the development of the water-kerosene stove prototype, driven by a shared goal to mitigate kerosene consumption and the harmful smoke associated with traditional cooking methods.

Recognition and Support for Innovation

The hybrid stove quickly drew attention at local science exhibitions and was featured in newspapers. Its innovative design and practical benefits culminated in it winning first prize at a state-level exhibition in 2003, where it was awarded by the then Education Minister, Indrajit Kumar Patel.

Following this recognition, the National Innovation Foundation (NIF), in collaboration with the Grassroots Innovations Augmentation Network (GIANs), extended crucial support. They sanctioned ₹37,250 from their Micro Venture Innovation Fund to aid further prototype development and market research for Mishra's water-kerosene stove, alongside three other promising innovations.

“A low-cost modification that can trim fuel use by roughly a fifth while cutting emissions addresses both household expenses and public-health priorities,” noted experts on the impact of such innovations.

Mishra's invention highlights the potential of grassroots innovation to address real-world challenges, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas where kerosene remains a primary cooking fuel despite rising costs and health concerns from indoor air pollution.
