· · 3 min read

Dinesh Thakkar, founder of AngelOne, has purchased an eight-storey sea-facing luxury tower in Juhu, Mumbai, for ₹711 crore. Named 'Angelus,' this acquisition marks the country's most expensive residential unit purchase.

Dinesh Thakkar, the visionary founder, chairman, and managing director of AngelOne, has made headlines with the acquisition of a sprawling luxury tower in Mumbai's upscale Juhu area. The property, valued at an astonishing ₹711 crore, sets a new record as India's most expensive residential unit purchase.

The opulent residence, which Thakkar has named 'Angelus,' is an entire G+7 storey tower located on Juhu’s prestigious Tara Road. This exclusive address is renowned for housing prominent business families, industrialists, and celebrities. The sea-facing tower spans an impressive 63,000 square feet and is part of the Embassy Terazza development, an ultra-luxury, low-density project spread over two acres with approximately 50 residences.

A Sanctuary for Family Living

Thakkar expressed his motivation for the purchase, stating his desire for privacy, spaciousness, breathtaking views, and a sanctuary that would serve as a cherished family home. The Embassy Terazza development offers one residence per floor across its five towers, providing panoramic sea and city views, meticulously planned layouts, lush gardens, and a suite of wellness and lifestyle amenities designed for an elevated living experience.

Who is Dinesh Thakkar? The Journey of AngelOne's Founder

Dinesh Thakkar's journey to becoming a titan in the financial world is a testament to resilience and innovation. Born in Mulund, Mumbai, into a family with roots in textile trading, Thakkar pursued science education before venturing into the stock market after Class 12.

Early Challenges and Entrepreneurial Spirit

His initial foray into the stock market was fraught with challenges. Borrowing funds from friends, Thakkar faced significant losses of around ₹6 lakh due to market volatility. Rather than retreating, these setbacks fueled his determination to understand the brokerage industry better. He identified critical gaps in how retail investors were served, particularly regarding transparency and real-time information.

Thakkar revolutionized client service by introducing real-time trade confirmations via walkie-talkies, a pioneering move at the time. Despite facing further adversity during the 1992 securities scam, which left him heavily indebted, he remained committed to building an ethical, transparent, and technology-driven brokerage firm.

From Angel Broking to AngelOne

Incorporated in 1996, Angel Broking steadily expanded its services to include wealth management, retail and corporate broking, and later, commodity broking. The company successfully launched its Initial Public Offering (IPO) in September 2020, listing on both the BSE and NSE a month later. In 2021, Angel Broking rebranded as AngelOne, reflecting its broader scope and digital-first approach.

Beyond his leadership at AngelOne, Thakkar also holds board positions at other entities, including Angel Fincap, Angel Insurance Brokers & Advisors, Mimansa Software Systems, and Angel Wellness, showcasing his diverse business interests and continued influence in the financial sector.
