· · 2 min read

Nuvama Institutional Equities predicts major shifts in AMFI's upcoming re-categorization, with IRFC and Vedanta potentially moving to the midcap list. SBI Funds Management Ltd is anticipated to enter the largecap category, impacting investor portfolios.

Mumbai, India – India's mutual fund industry is bracing for significant shifts in stock categorization, with Nuvama Institutional Equities projecting that Indian Railway Finance Corporation Ltd (IRFC) and Vedanta Ltd could transition from largecap to midcap status. Simultaneously, SBI Funds Management Ltd is expected to join the coveted largecap category.

The Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI) is anticipated to announce these re-categorizations in the first week of January 2027. The changes will be based on average market capitalization levels during the cut-off period of July 1 to December 31, 2026, and are slated to become effective from February 1, 2027.

According to Nuvama's analysis, the largecap cut-off is estimated to rise to Rs 1.12 lakh crore, up from Rs 1.06 lakh crore in June 2026. The midcap cut-off is also projected to increase to Rs 36,800 crore from Rs 33,600 crore.

Key Shifts in Largecap Category

Several prominent largecap stocks are expected to be re-categorized as midcaps. Besides IRFC and Vedanta, this list includes Godrej Consumer Products, Ambuja Cements, Indus Towers, Tata Consumer Products Ltd, and HDFC Asset Management Company Ltd. These movements could necessitate portfolio adjustments for various mutual fund schemes.

Midcap to Largecap Transitions

Conversely, some midcap companies are poised for an upgrade to largecap status. Nuvama identifies Bosch, Siemens Energy India, Lodha Developers, Zydus Lifesciences, Lenskart Solutions, and GE Vernova T&D India as potential new largecap entrants. The recent debutant, SBI Funds Management, is also seen as a strong candidate for entry into the largecap basket.

New Entrants and Smallcap Shifts

The re-categorization will also affect the midcap and smallcap segments. RBL Bank, Welspun Corp, Ather Energy, Aegis Logistics, Gland Pharma, Aditya Infotech, JB Chemicals & Pharma Ltd, Sterlite Technologies, Manipal Health, and Indo-MIM are among the stocks seen as potential new entrants to the midcap list.

Furthermore, some existing midcap stocks like Procter & Gamble Hygiene, UCO Bank, Godfrey Phillips India, IREDA, Blue Star, Escorts Kubota, ITC Hotels, and Tata Investment Corporation may be re-categorized as smallcaps. The smallcap category could also see new additions such as Dhoot Transmission, Milky Mist Dairy Food, ESDS Software Solution, Lalithaa Jewellery Mart, Horizon Industrial Parks, Juniper Green Energy, and Molbio Diagnostics.
