Demand for Agentic AI Engineers surged 260% in 2026, making them the most sought-after tech professionals. This rapid shift, driven by AI's wider enterprise adoption, is prompting companies to reskill their workforce and redefine roles.

The landscape of technology employment is undergoing a significant transformation as artificial intelligence transitions from experimental stages to widespread enterprise integration. India's tech job market, in particular, is witnessing a surge in demand for specialized AI professionals, with Agentic AI Engineers leading the charge.

Agentic AI Engineers See Explosive Growth

According to an analysis by CIEL HR, demand for Agentic AI Engineers experienced an astonishing 260% increase in 2026 compared to the previous year. This makes them the fastest-growing role among emerging technology positions tracked by the firm. Other AI-centric roles also saw substantial growth: GenAI Solutions Architects and AI Product Owners both registered a 120% rise in demand, while LLM Engineers saw an 86.5% increase and MLOps Engineers grew by 82.2%.

AI Automates Routine Tasks, Shifts Focus for Human Workers

As AI capabilities advance, the technology is increasingly taking on routine functions within the tech sector. CIEL HR estimates that AI can now manage up to 70% of the workload associated with ticket resolution and report generation, and approximately 65% of test-case creation. This suggests a high potential for task-level automation in areas like manual testing and support.

However, this shift does not imply the disappearance of these roles. Instead, it indicates a redefinition of responsibilities, allowing human professionals to concentrate on exceptions, complex problem-solving, and tasks requiring nuanced judgment.

Reskilling Becomes Crucial Amidst Skill Gaps

The evolving demand highlights significant skill gaps within the current technology talent pool, ranging from 38% to 61% across critical areas like AI, cloud computing, and cybersecurity. This pressure is compelling organizations to invest in internal capability building rather than solely relying on external hiring.

“AI is changing the value attached to different technology skills. The opportunity for organisations is to view this as a workforce transition, identifying where technology can take on repetitive work while building the skills needed for the next phase of growth,” said Aditya Narayan Mishra, MD & CEO, CIEL HR.

IT services companies are responding with comprehensive AI-focused training programs, role-based reskilling initiatives, cloud certifications, and structured early-career development. Existing professionals in delivery, infrastructure, support, and engineering are being enrolled in these programs to align their skills with the rapidly changing technological demands.

“The workforce transition is not going to happen through hiring alone. Organisations will need to consider how existing talent can move into emerging skill areas as the nature of technology work changes.
