US Depletes Half of THAAD Interceptors Defending Israel, Report Says

· · 2 min read

The United States fired over 200 Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) interceptors to defend Israel during its recent conflict with Iran, reportedly depleting nearly half of the Pentagon's total inventory. This significant expenditure occurred during a war that began in February and is currently under a ceasefire.

A recent report, citing US officials, indicates that the United States utilized more than 200 Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) interceptors to safeguard Israel during its conflict with Iran. This extensive deployment, detailed by The Washington Post, resulted in the depletion of almost half of the Pentagon's entire THAAD inventory.

Beyond the THAAD systems, US naval vessels in the eastern Mediterranean also launched over 100 Standard Missile-3 and Standard Missile-6 interceptors. In contrast, Israel reportedly fired fewer than 100 Arrow interceptors and approximately 90 David's Sling interceptors, some targeting less sophisticated projectiles from Iran-backed groups in Yemen and Lebanon.

Conflict Context and Future Concerns

The conflict between the US and Israel against Iran commenced on February 28, targeting Iranian military, naval, and air force facilities, and eliminating key Iranian leadership. Hostilities, which included Iranian attacks on US allies in West Asia, have been paused since an April 8 ceasefire, with ongoing discussions for a peace deal to resolve over four decades of tensions.

A US administration official noted that the US engaged twice as many Iranian missiles, firing around 120 more interceptors than Israel. Should hostilities resume, especially as threatened by President Donald Trump, the US military might need to deploy an even greater share of interceptors, partly because some Israeli missile-defense batteries are currently offline for maintenance.

Defense of Resource Allocation

The Pentagon defended the balance of military resources, with chief spokesman Sean Parnell stating that ballistic missile interceptors are just one component of a comprehensive, layered air defense network. He affirmed that both Israel and the US shared the defensive burden equitably during Operation Epic Fury, effectively deploying fighter aircraft, counter-UAS systems, and other advanced capabilities.

The Israeli government echoed this sentiment, with the Israeli Embassy in Washington emphasizing the close coordination of Operations Roaring Lion and Epic Fury. The embassy highlighted Israel's unique military willingness, readiness, shared interests, and capabilities as a partner to the US.

These figures underscore the significant scale of US interceptor use during the now-paused conflict, as peace deal negotiations continue.
