At just 23 years old, Tushar Kumar has made history by becoming the youngest Indian-origin Mayor in the United Kingdom. Kumar officially took charge as the Mayor of Elstree and Borehamwood in eastern England, marking a significant milestone in his rapid political career.
A Labour councillor, Kumar first joined the Elstree and Borehamwood Town Council in 2023. His ascent to the top civic post follows a period of service as Deputy Mayor. Notably, he was previously recognized as Britain's youngest Indian-origin councillor when first elected at age 20, while still a second-year Politics undergraduate at King's College London.
Kumar's Journey from Rohtak to UK Mayorship
Born in Rohtak, Haryana, India, Tushar Kumar lived there until the age of 10 before his family relocated to the UK. His mother, Parveen Rani, also holds a position on the Hertsmere Borough Council and has served as deputy mayor, indicating a family connection to public service.
Kumar credits the Civic Leadership Academy at King's College London for bolstering his confidence and public speaking skills. He has gained diverse experience, including roles at the Department for Work and Pensions and a national LGBTQ+ charity, along with volunteering for literacy initiatives and community events. Having recently graduated, he now works full-time and plans to pursue a master's in political economy at UCL while fulfilling his mayoral duties.
Priorities and Aspirations for Elstree and Borehamwood
In his new role, Mayor Kumar has outlined several key priorities for the upcoming year. These include fostering a strong community presence, providing robust support for local organizations and charities, and actively encouraging young people to engage in public service. He has chosen WD6 Food Support, a local voluntary network aiding residents in need, as his mayoral charity.
"An incredible honour to officially become the Mayor of Elstree and Borehamwood last night and, at 23 years old, the youngest ever Indian-origin Mayor in the history of the United Kingdom. I am truly humbled by the trust placed in me and incredibly grateful for all the support, kindness and encouragement I have received throughout this journey."
Looking further ahead, Kumar openly shares his ambition to one day become the UK Prime Minister, drawing inspiration from figures like Rishi Sunak. For now, his focus remains firmly on his civic responsibilities, enhancing community life, and promoting youth participation in local governance.
