High Gold Prices Test Indian Buyers: Lightweight Jewellery & Exchanges Gain Traction

· · 3 min read

Indian consumers are adapting to gold prices nearing ₹1.50 lakh per 10 grams by favoring lightweight jewellery, lower-carat options, and gold exchanges. This shift reflects a growing focus on affordability ahead of the festive and wedding seasons.

As gold prices in India hover near ₹1.50 lakh per 10 grams, consumers are increasingly rethinking their purchasing strategies. While a recent market correction offers a potential buying window, elevated prices continue to reshape buying behavior, pushing affordability to the forefront of decisions for the upcoming Diwali and wedding seasons.

Consumers Adapt to Elevated Gold Rates

The high cost of gold isn't deterring buyers entirely, but it is significantly influencing their choices. Mangesh Chauhan, MD of Sky Gold & Diamonds, notes a clear trend: growing demand for lightweight jewellery designs, lower-carat gold products, and gold exchange programs. These options allow consumers to manage their budgets while still participating in traditional gold purchases.

“Buyers are becoming more price-conscious, with lightweight designs, lower-carat jewellery and gold exchanges gaining traction,” Chauhan stated, emphasizing that affordability remains a key consideration for festive and wedding demand.

Retailers are observing that while the volume of gold sold might remain steady, the higher prices contribute to an overall increase in sales value. Gold exchanges, in particular, provide a practical way for consumers to offset the upfront cost of new jewellery, enabling them to retain the cultural significance of gold without a prohibitive financial outlay.

Market Dynamics and Future Outlook

Gold and silver markets recently experienced a correction following a strong rally, partly due to profit-booking and shifts in US interest rate expectations. However, Chauhan suggests that the broader demand for gold remains robust, supported by consistent central bank buying globally and ongoing geopolitical uncertainties.

For Indian consumers, domestic gold prices are further impacted by the rupee's performance against the dollar and prevailing import duties, which can keep gold expensive even after global corrections. The outlook for gold prices will continue to be closely tied to global financial conditions, especially US interest rates and the dollar's strength, which can trigger short-term price movements.

Strategic Buying for Investors

For those purchasing gold as a long-term investment rather than for immediate jewellery needs, Chauhan recommends a staggered buying approach. Rather than attempting to time the market's bottom, investors could benefit from purchasing in stages. They should closely monitor US interest rates, the dollar-rupee exchange rate, and broader global economic developments.

As retailers replenish inventories in anticipation of the festive season, a period of stable gold prices could boost consumer confidence. However, the ultimate success of the festive and wedding buying season will largely depend on sustained affordability and price stability, continuing to drive the trend towards more budget-friendly gold options.
