US President Donald Trump has issued a stark warning of further military strikes against Iran, declaring that a fragile ceasefire between the two nations has effectively collapsed. Speaking on Wednesday from Ankara, Turkiye, on the sidelines of a NATO summit, Trump also revived an earlier threat to take control of Kharg Island, a critical hub for Iran's oil exports.
The renewed escalation has significantly heightened concerns over regional stability in the Middle East and the potential for severe disruptions to global oil supplies, particularly those transiting through the Strait of Hormuz. Following Trump's comments, Brent crude prices surged by more than 5%.
Ceasefire Declared Over Amid Escalating Tensions
President Trump stated that the temporary truce was no longer in force, though he acknowledged that diplomatic negotiations could continue. "For me, I think it's over," Trump remarked when questioned about the ceasefire's status, expressing little optimism for the success of ongoing talks.
His declaration comes after a series of mutual attacks. The United States had reportedly carried out "heavy strikes" against Iranian targets, following what Trump described as Iranian attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz using drones and missiles. "We hit them very hard last night," Trump said, adding, "We'll probably hit them hard again tonight."
US and Iranian Forces Exchange Blows
The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that American forces had targeted Iranian air defense systems, radar installations, and over 60 fast attack boats operated by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). CENTCOM stated the operation aimed to impose "heavy costs" on Iran for its actions against commercial shipping in international waters.
Iran swiftly retaliated, launching missiles and drones at US military facilities in Bahrain and Kuwait, both significant American military presences in the Gulf. Kuwaiti authorities reported intercepting two ballistic missiles and 13 drones, though debris caused damage to the country's electricity infrastructure. Bahrain also activated missile warning systems as a precaution. Iranian state media also reported explosions in Bandar Mahshahr and Bushehr, the latter home to Iran's nuclear power facilities, following the US strikes.
Kharg Island: A Strategic Target
Trump's revival of the threat to seize Kharg Island underscores its strategic importance. Approximately 90% of Iran's oil exports pass through this island. He has previously floated similar proposals, arguing that targeting Iran's energy infrastructure could increase pressure on Tehran. Beyond Kharg Island, Trump has also suggested striking civilian infrastructure, including power generation and desalination facilities, if Iranian attacks on shipping and US interests persist.
Senior Iranian officials have maintained a defiant stance. Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf declared that "the era of bullying and extortion is over," asserting that Iran would not yield to external pressure. With both sides engaged in fresh attacks and the prospect of negotiations dimming, concerns are mounting that the conflict could once again destabilize the wider Middle East and severely impact global energy markets.
