Trump's Direct Message to Tehran
US President Donald Trump, addressing the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, issued a stern warning to Iran on Tuesday. He cautioned Tehran against postponing a potential agreement in anticipation of how he might perform in upcoming US midterm elections, stating such results would not influence his decisions regarding the Islamic Republic.
President Trump emphasized his resolve, telling the assembly, "I'll be here 2.5 years." He explicitly dismissed the idea that election outcomes would factor into his approach to Iran. "I gave absolutely no credence and will not give credence to the election when it comes to Iran," Trump asserted, adding that his only consideration was ensuring Iran never obtains a nuclear weapon.
A Stark Choice: Deal or Military Action
The President outlined a clear dichotomy for Iran's future. He expressed optimism that a deal could be reached swiftly after the elections, suggesting it would allow Iran to rebuild and potentially become a dominant force in the Middle East and globally. However, Trump also presented a grim alternative, questioning whether to "annihilate the Islamic Republic, and do it quickly, never giving them a chance to kill and destroy people and countries again."
He underscored his belief that an agreement was pragmatic for Iran, stating, "it doesn't make sense for them not to" pursue a deal.
UN Security Council Condemnation and Hormuz Operations
In his address, President Trump also acknowledged the United Nations Security Council, thanking its members for overwhelmingly passing a resolution condemning Iran's "despicable terrorist attacks on commercial shipping."
He further highlighted ongoing US naval operations in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global oil shipments. Trump noted that the US Navy had recently escorted over a billion barrels of oil through the strait, indicating increased shipping activity since the start of the conflict.
