Trump Calls Iran 'Islamic Republic of Japan,' Confuses Zelenskyy with Putin Amid Tensions

· · 3 min read

During a press interaction in Ankara, former US President Donald Trump made two verbal slips, referring to Iran as the 'Islamic Republic of Japan' and mistaking Ukrainian President Zelenskyy for Russian President Putin. These remarks occurred amid discussions about rising US-Iran tensions and the declared end of a ceasefire.

Former US President Donald Trump drew significant attention during a press conference in Ankara on Wednesday, where he appeared alongside Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the sidelines of a NATO summit. The interaction was marked by two verbal gaffes that quickly circulated online, occurring as Trump discussed escalating tensions with Iran and declared an end to the US-Iran ceasefire.

Verbal Slips Amid Iran Tensions

In one notable instance, Trump mistakenly referred to Iran as the "Islamic Republic of Japan." He made this comment while describing an alleged missile attack two months prior, claiming "we had 111 missiles shot by the Islamic Republic of Japan" at the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier in the Arabian Sea over approximately one hour. It was clear he intended to say the Islamic Republic of Iran, as he continued to detail what he described as an Iranian missile barrage.

This gaffe came as Trump defended recent US military strikes on Iran and asserted that the interim ceasefire with Tehran was effectively concluded. "For me, I think it's over," Trump stated when questioned about the ceasefire's status, though he added that US negotiators could continue talks with Tehran if they wished. He also issued a warning that Washington was prepared to launch further attacks if deemed necessary.

The Context: Escalating US-Iran Conflict

The backdrop to these remarks includes recent US strikes, which Washington launched after accusing Iran of attacking commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. In retaliation, Iran reportedly targeted US military facilities in Bahrain and Kuwait, leading to an ongoing exchange of warnings between both sides regarding the future of negotiations. This latest escalation has also rekindled concerns about global energy markets, with attacks on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz causing oil prices to rise.

Zelenskyy Mistaken for Putin

Later in the same press interaction, Trump made another verbal slip. While turning towards President Zelenskyy, he asked reporters, "Do you have a question for President Putin?" He appeared to mistakenly refer to the Ukrainian leader as Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Video clips of both remarks rapidly spread across social media platforms. Critics highlighted the errors, with some online users reviving calls to invoke the 25th Amendment, which outlines a constitutional process for declaring a US president unable to fulfill the duties of office. However, these online reactions did not indicate any formal political movement to invoke the amendment.

The Ankara press appearance, combining Trump's comments on Iran, his declaration of the ceasefire's end, and the two verbal slips, occurred weeks after his 80th birthday. The White House had previously released a memo from his physician before his birthday, stating that he was in excellent health with strong overall physical function.
