The Indo-Russian Rifles Private Limited (IRRPL) facility in Amethi, Uttar Pradesh, has achieved a significant milestone in India's defense manufacturing capabilities, successfully test-firing the first AK-203 'Sher' assault rifle built entirely with domestically sourced components.
This prototype, which underwent successful test firing including burst mode, marks a complete departure from reliance on imported parts. Every single component and input material used in its construction was procured from Indian manufacturers, affirming a key advancement for local defense production.
Paving the Way for Army Trials
The successful validation of this fully indigenised rifle is a critical step towards its integration into the Indian armed forces. User trials, involving the Indian Army, are scheduled to commence in September 2026. Major General SK Sharma, CEO and Managing Director of IRRPL, confirmed the achievement via a LinkedIn post, sharing footage of the test firing.
Major General Sharma emphasized that this accomplishment goes beyond mere localization of select parts, representing a “true, end-to-end '100% genuine indigenisation' of the rifle.” He lauded the development as an embodiment of the 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' (self-reliant India) initiative, noting that initial firing trial results were highly encouraging.
IRRPL's Production Goals and Future Outlook
IRRPL is a joint venture comprising Indian Defence Public Sector Undertakings—Advanced Weapons and Equipment India Limited (AWEIL) and Troop Comforts Limited (OSL)—alongside Russian defense giants Concern Kalashnikov and Rosoboronexport.
With the prototype successfully validated, the factory is now concentrating on producing the necessary batch of fully indigenised rifles for the upcoming military trials. The facility aims to significantly streamline its operations, targeting a production rate of one AK-203 rifle every 100 seconds.
Under an existing ₹5,200 crore contract, IRRPL is tasked with supplying 6,01,427 AK-203 rifles to the Indian armed forces. While the original delivery deadline was October 2032, enhanced local production optimization and increased operational capacity are expected to accelerate this timeline. The company now plans to complete the entire order by December 2030, nearly a full year ahead of schedule.
