TMC's Sukhendu Sekhar Ray Quits Rajya Sabha, Party Amid West Bengal Political Shift

· · 2 min read

Senior Trinamool Congress leader Sukhendu Sekhar Ray has resigned from the Rajya Sabha and the party's primary membership. He cited the electorate's decisive mandate for the BJP in West Bengal, ending TMC's 15-year rule.

In a significant political development, veteran Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Sukhendu Sekhar Ray announced his resignation from both the Rajya Sabha and the party's primary membership on Monday. Ray's departure marks a fresh setback for Mamata Banerjee's party, particularly following its recent electoral defeat in the West Bengal Assembly elections.

Ray Cites Electoral Mandate for BJP

Explaining his decision, Sukhendu Sekhar Ray stated that his resignation was in respectful acceptance of the electorate's historic verdict. He highlighted that voters had delivered a decisive mandate in favor of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which he described as a move to end what he termed the Trinamool Congress's 15-year period of "anarchical rule."

Ray specifically criticized the TMC's governance, citing "widespread unbridled corruption, atrocities committed against women, abysmal failure in the field of health, education, industry, law and order, [and] employment." He further noted that the newly elected BJP government in West Bengal had already begun taking initiatives for the state's comprehensive development and reconstruction, aligning with its election manifesto.

Deepening Crisis for Trinamool Congress

Sukhendu Sekhar Ray's resignation comes at a challenging time for the Trinamool Congress, which is grappling with an internal crisis. The party has reportedly seen a substantial number of its legislators defect, with approximately 60 out of 80 MLAs reportedly backing a rival faction led by Ritabrata Banerjee. This internal dissent, coupled with electoral losses, underscores the growing pressures on Mamata Banerjee's leadership.

The departure of a senior figure like Ray from both his parliamentary role and party membership is expected to further intensify scrutiny on the TMC's stability and its future political strategy in West Bengal.
