· · 2 min read

A 31-year-old California man, Cole Tomas Allen, has been identified as the suspect in a shooting incident near the White House Correspondents' Dinner. President Trump was evacuated from the event, confirming the suspect was armed with multiple weapons.

A shooting incident outside the annual White House Correspondents' Association dinner in Washington on Saturday night, April 26, 2026, led to the evacuation of President Donald Trump and other senior officials. Authorities have identified the suspect as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, from Torrance, California.

President Trump, addressing reporters at the White House after being safely evacuated from the Washington Hilton Hotel, confirmed that the suspect was armed with multiple weapons before being intercepted by the Secret Service. One law enforcement officer was shot during the confrontation but was protected by a bullet-resistant vest, preventing serious injury.

Details Emerge on the Incident and Suspect

Law enforcement officials told The Associated Press that Allen was a guest at the hotel where the high-profile event was taking place. Washington D.C.'s interim police chief, Jeffery W. Carroll, stated that Allen's room had been secured as part of the ongoing investigation, though the motive behind the shooting and the intended target remain unknown at this early stage.

Inside the subterranean ballroom where the dinner was being held, hundreds of guests, including top journalists and politicians, ducked for cover as the Secret Service and other authorities swiftly responded. Attendees described audible gasps and shouts for people to take cover, with some beginning a “God Bless America” chant as the President was escorted from the stage.

High-Level Evacuations and International Reactions

In addition to President Trump, Vice President JD Vance, Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio were among the officials under Secret Service protection who were evacuated. The event, initially paused, was later scrapped entirely. Weijia Jiang, president of the White House Correspondents’ Association, stated, “We will do this again,” as staff began dismantling the venue.

International leaders also reacted to the news. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed relief that President Trump, the First Lady, and Vice President were safe, condemning the violence and emphasizing its lack of place in a democracy. Domestically, House Speaker Mike Johnson and House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries offered prayers and called for an end to violence and chaos in America. The FBI confirmed a suspect was in custody but did not provide further details as the investigation continues.
