US-India Alliance Undiluted by Pakistan Ties
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, speaking in New Delhi, has publicly assured India that Washington's expanding engagement with Pakistan will not diminish its strategic partnership with India. Rubio's remarks came during a joint press conference with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, where he addressed Indian concerns regarding recent developments in US foreign policy.
Concerns had arisen in India following increased US interactions with Pakistan, including President Donald Trump's public praise for Pakistan Army chief Asim Munir and a White House visit. Pakistan has also taken on a mediation role in the Iran conflict, prompting questions about the implications for the long-standing US-India strategic alliance.
Rubio firmly rejected the notion that US relations with any country, including Pakistan, would undermine its bond with India. "I don't view our relation with any country in the world as coming at the expense of our strategic alliance with India for the reasons I've outlined here already earlier today," he stated, emphasizing that responsible nations maintain diverse international relationships.
Addressing Trade Frictions and US Approach
Beyond geopolitical concerns, Rubio also tackled questions about trade frictions between the two nations and what some observers perceive as a more transactional US approach. He dismissed suggestions that the US-India relationship had lost momentum under the Trump administration.
The Secretary of State explained that recent trade disputes stemmed from a broader global effort by President Trump to rebalance international trade, rather than any specific policy targeting India. "The President came in and said we have a trade situation involving the US economy that doesn't work moving forward. There's a huge imbalance that's built up, and it needs to be addressed," Rubio elaborated.
Rubio indicated significant progress towards a new trade agreement between the United States and India, expressing confidence that it would be mutually beneficial and enduring. His assurances aim to provide clarity and reinforce the perception of a robust and continuing strategic partnership between the two democracies.
