Jan Suraaj founder Prashant Kishor is set to make his first foray into electoral politics, announcing his candidacy for the upcoming Bankipur Assembly by-election in Bihar. The Election Commission has scheduled the bypoll for July 30, following the vacancy of the high-profile urban seat.
Bankipur: A BJP Stronghold
The Bankipur Assembly constituency, located in Patna district and falling under the Patna Sahib Lok Sabha constituency, is widely considered a bastion for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The seat was previously held by the BJP's Nitin Nabin, who secured three consecutive terms, including a victory by over 51,000 votes against RJD's Rekha Kumari in the 2025 Assembly election. The seat became vacant after Nabin resigned to assume the role of BJP's National President.
Kishor's Electoral Debut and Jan Suraaj's Test
This by-election represents a significant moment for Prashant Kishor, who transitioned from a prominent political strategist to an active politician with the launch of his party, Jan Suraaj. It marks his first direct electoral contest.
The bypoll will also be a crucial test for Jan Suraaj. The party previously contested all 243 seats in the 2025 Bihar Assembly election but failed to secure any victories. Kishor's personal entry into the electoral fray from a challenging constituency like Bankipur will be closely watched for its implications on his political future and the trajectory of Jan Suraaj.
