GUWAHATI, ASSAM – Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Pradyut Bordoloi has established a commanding lead in the Dispur constituency as vote counting for the Assam Assembly Elections 2026 progresses. As of 1:00 PM IST on May 4, 2026, after 10 rounds of counting, Bordoloi secured 61,560 votes, positioning him far ahead of his closest competitor.
Congress Trails as Bordoloi Secures Strong Lead
Mira Borthakur Goswami of the Indian National Congress (INC) is trailing in a distant second, having garnered 25,880 votes. The remaining votes in Dispur were split among other candidates, with independent Jayanta Kumar Das receiving 9,751 votes, AAP candidate Ballav Patra 698 votes, and independent Ayush Kumar Singh 478 votes. A total of 1,575 votes were cast for 'None Of The Above' (NOTA).
The Impact of Bordoloi's Defection
Bordoloi's strong performance follows his high-profile defection from the Congress party to the BJP just days before the election. His resignation, which he stated was due to feeling “suffocated” and “humiliated” within the Congress, intensified the party's internal crisis in Assam. Bordoloi, formerly the sitting MP from Nagaon and chairman of the Congress manifesto committee for the Assam elections, tendered his resignation to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge.
His exit came less than a month after former Assam Congress president Bhupen Kumar Borah also joined the BJP, further weakening the opposition party's position. Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra commented on Bordoloi's departure, attributing his decision to internal disagreements surrounding ticket distribution, describing it as an unfortunate development for the party.
