Nithya Raman Elected Los Angeles Mayor, Defeating Incumbent Karen Bass

· · 2 min read

Nithya Raman has defeated incumbent Karen Bass to become the next mayor of Los Angeles, a significant victory for the Indian-origin urban planner. Her campaign prioritized public safety, affordable housing, and tackling homelessness.

Los Angeles has elected Nithya Raman as its next mayor, marking a major electoral win for the South Asian-American politician. Raman, an urban planner and a graduate of Harvard and MIT, successfully challenged incumbent Karen Bass in a contest that highlighted differing approaches to critical city issues.

A Historic Victory for Los Angeles

Raman's path to the mayor's office follows her initial election to the Los Angeles City Council in 2020. During that historic race, she became the first Asian-American woman and the first South Asian ever to serve on the City Council. Her recent mayoral campaign, launched in February, quickly evolved into a significant political battle, with Raman securing support from progressive groups like the Democratic Socialists of America and transportation advocacy organization Streets For All.

The election pitted Raman against Bass, who had garnered backing from much of Los Angeles' political establishment, including the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor and the county's Democratic Party. Voters ultimately chose Raman's vision for the city.

Focus on Homelessness and Urban Challenges

Before entering electoral politics, Nithya Raman served as Co-Chair of the Silver Lake Neighborhood Council Homelessness Committee and co-founded the SELAH Neighborhood Homeless Coalition. These experiences deeply informed her policy priorities.

Addressing Los Angeles' Homelessness Crisis

Since taking office on the City Council in December 2020, Raman has made homelessness a central focus. Her efforts have yielded tangible results, including:

  • Bringing over 2,000 individuals off the streets and into interim housing.
  • Facilitating permanent housing for 633 people.
  • More than tripling access to shelter beds within her district.

These initiatives, particularly dedicated encampment-to-home efforts, led to the first reduction in unsheltered homelessness in her district in six years. As mayor, Raman is expected to expand these successful strategies city-wide.

Broader Policy Agenda

Beyond homelessness, Raman's platform and work on the City Council have encompassed a range of critical issues for Los Angeles residents. Her office has championed:

  • Affordable housing initiatives.
  • Ambitious climate goals for the city.
  • Stronger renter protections.
  • Neighborhood upgrades and community-led projects.
  • Enhanced fire safety measures.

As a working mother and immigrant, Raman brings a diverse perspective to City Hall, promising a fresh approach to governance in America's second-most populous city.
