Nila Vikhe Patil, daughter of renowned Maharashtra educationist Ashok Vikhe Patil, has achieved a significant political milestone by being elected to the Swedish Parliament, known as the Riksdag. The 41-year-old secured a seat representing the Stockholm City constituency in elections held on September 13.
A Voice for Children and Environment
Following her election, Ms. Patil expressed her enthusiasm, stating, "It feels nice to be a part of the 349-member Parliament. I am looking forward to contributing to the city and the country." She outlined her primary areas of interest, emphasizing children's welfare and environmental issues. "I would like to be a voice for those who cannot vote," she added.
Deep Roots in Politics and Education
Nila Vikhe Patil hails from a distinguished political and educational family in Maharashtra. She is the great-granddaughter of Vithalrao Vikhe Patil, who founded Asia’s first cooperative sugar factory. Her grandfather was the former Union minister Balasaheb Vikhe Patil. Ms. Patil also holds the distinction of being the niece of current Maharashtra minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil.
Recalling her grandfather's profound influence, she shared, "I hope to make my grandfather proud. He made me read the state budget when I was 15." Though born in Sweden, Ms. Patil spent part of her early childhood in Ahmednagar, Maharashtra, maintaining a strong connection to India despite building her political career abroad.
Extensive Political and Academic Background
Before her election to the Riksdag, Nila Vikhe Patil held several key political and administrative roles in Sweden. She served as a Political Adviser in the Swedish Prime Minister’s Office during Stefan Löfven’s administration, where her work focused on critical areas such as finance, taxation, and housing. Additionally, she was elected to the Stockholm Municipal Corporation’s City Council.
A dedicated member of Sweden’s Green Party for many years, Ms. Patil has been actively involved with various party organizations, including the Swedish Young Greens, Green Party Gothenburg, Green Students of Sweden, and Green Party Stockholm. She also sits on the Election Committee of the Stockholm Green Party.
Academically, Ms. Patil is highly accomplished, holding a Bachelor's degree and an MBA from the Gothenburg School of Business, where she specialized in Economics and Law. She further pursued an MBA at the University of Complutense in Madrid.
Green Party's Role in Swedish Politics
The recent Swedish elections saw the left-leaning opposition secure a narrow majority, winning 176 out of the 349 Riksdag seats. The Green Party, a key component of this opposition, is known for its strong focus on environmentalism, renewable energy, and broader green political initiatives. Her father, Ashok Vikhe Patil, chairman of the Vikhe Patil Foundation, expressed immense pride in his daughter's achievement, highlighting her continued connection to her Indian heritage.
