Immigration New Zealand has announced significant changes to its Green List Work to Residence pathway, affecting 17 occupations that will no longer qualify for this direct route to permanent residency from March 8, 2027. These adjustments are part of broader immigration reforms, including the introduction of new Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) pathways designed to streamline and reduce overlap between various residence routes.
Impacted Occupations and New Pathways
The upcoming changes mean that individuals working in these specific roles will need to explore alternative routes for residency, primarily through the new SMC pathways, provided they meet the associated qualification, work experience, and wage requirements. While employers can still recruit migrants for these occupations via the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV), the previous Green List benefits, such as certain labor market test exemptions and priority processing, will cease to apply.
Occupations Removed from Tier 2 Green List Work to Residence Visa (Effective March 8, 2027):
- Building Associate (Building Construction Supervisor)
- Automotive Electrician
- Diesel Motor Mechanic (including Heavy Vehicle Inspector)
- Motor Mechanic (General)
- Motorcycle Mechanic
- Panel Beater
- Vehicle Painter
- Metal Fabricator
- Welder
- Fitter (General)
- Fitter and Turner
- Fitter-Welder
- Metal Machinist (First Class)
- Crane, Hoist or Lift Operator
- Telecommunications Technician
- Paving Plant Operator
- Pressure Welder
Transitional Rules for Existing Workers
Migrants who have already begun accruing qualifying work experience towards the 24-month Work to Residence Visa requirement before the March 2027 changes take effect will still be able to count that experience. However, they must continue to satisfy all other residence criteria.
Other Key Immigration Adjustments
Beyond the Green List modifications, Immigration New Zealand is also implementing several other notable changes:
Special Education Teachers Gain Direct Residence Route
Four specialized teaching occupations will transition from the Work to Residence Visa pathway to the more direct Straight to Residence Visa pathway. This allows eligible professionals to apply for residency without first completing two years of work experience in New Zealand. These roles include:
- Special Needs Teacher
- Teacher of the Hearing Impaired
- Teacher of the Sight Impaired
- Special Education Teachers not elsewhere classified
Updates for Other Occupations
- Sterilisation Technicians: Green List eligibility for this role will now be restricted to graduate and registered members of the New Zealand Sterile Sciences Association.
- Career Counsellor: This occupation will be removed from the Tier 1 Green List roles for the Straight to Residence Visa. However, Career Counsellors may still qualify for residency through the Skilled Migrant Category or other existing pathways if they meet the specific requirements.
The New Zealand government has indicated that a comprehensive review of the Green List is anticipated in 2027, suggesting further potential adjustments to its immigration framework.
