Tehran is reportedly on the verge of receiving a significant shipment of Chinese-made shoulder-fired air-defense missile launchers, a move aimed at strengthening its short-range air defense capabilities. This acquisition comes after months of heightened tensions and conflict with the United States and Israel, which have highlighted vulnerabilities in Iran's existing defense systems.
Significant Defense Deal Unveiled
According to sources familiar with the agreement, the contract, valued between $60 million and $70 million, covers the purchase of 300 to 400 man-portable air-defense systems (MANPADS). These include advanced Chinese-made QW-12 and FN-16 missiles, designed for engaging low-flying aircraft, helicopters, and drones. The initial deliveries are expected within weeks.
The deal was reportedly facilitated by Zhongqing Baoshang International Investment, a Hong Kong-based company acting as an intermediary between Iran and the Chinese supplier. The planned acquisition represents one of Tehran's most substantial known efforts to reinforce its short-range air defenses since the outbreak of recent conflicts.
Logistics and Denials
Sources indicate that the first shipments are anticipated to be transported by air from Urumqi in western China. From there, they will transit through Pakistan before reaching Iran. However, specifics regarding the final leg of the journey, whether by air or road, remain unconfirmed.
Both China and Pakistan have publicly denied involvement in the deal. China's foreign ministry stated that relevant reports were "completely groundless," asserting its role in promoting peace. Pakistan's military media wing, ISPR, similarly dismissed claims of facilitation as "absolutely concocted and false."
Strategic Importance of MANPADS
Military experts emphasize the strategic value of portable air-defense systems like the QW-12 and FN-16. Their ability to be rapidly deployed by small teams and frequently relocated makes them less vulnerable to counterattacks compared to fixed air-defense batteries. These infrared-guided surface-to-air missile systems are crucial for providing short-range protection for critical military installations, energy infrastructure, and other sensitive sites, addressing the weaknesses revealed in Iran's ability to protect such assets.
