The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has officially announced Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri as its candidate for the upcoming Rajya Sabha by-election in Madhya Pradesh. This crucial bypoll is slated for November 12, 2026.
Puri Replaces L. Murugan
Puri's nomination comes after the seat became vacant following the resignation of L. Murugan earlier this month. Murugan, whose term was originally set to continue until April 2, 2030, stepped down from the Upper House on October 13, 2026, with the vacancy formally arising on October 14. He stated his intention to concentrate on strengthening the BJP's organizational structure in Tamil Nadu.
Notably, Puri was not included in the BJP's list of candidates for the October 16 Rajya Sabha elections from Uttar Pradesh, where his current term is due to conclude on November 25. His selection for the Madhya Pradesh seat marks a significant move by the party.
Election Commission Schedule
According to the Election Commission of India's schedule for the Madhya Pradesh by-election, candidates can file their nominations until November 2, 2026. The scrutiny of nominations is scheduled for November 3, with withdrawals allowed until November 5. If required, polling will take place on November 12, from 9 am to 4 pm, and vote counting will commence at 5 pm on the same day.
Petroleum Portfolio's Renewed Significance
Hardeep Singh Puri's continued presence in the Rajya Sabha is particularly relevant given the heightened importance of his petroleum portfolio. Amid ongoing geopolitical tensions and concerns over global energy supplies, his ministry has been at the forefront of ensuring India's fuel availability and energy security. Under his leadership, India has also intensified efforts to boost domestic oil and gas exploration, aiming to reduce the nation's reliance on imports.
Earlier this year, the government initiated drilling at the first appraisal well in the Mahanadi offshore basin, part of a broader program to assess hydrocarbon potential through four planned deepwater wells.
