Indian American Democrat Suhas Subramanyam has secured his re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives from Virginia's 10th Congressional District. He defeated Republican Dave T. Beckwith with a decisive 63.16% of the vote, marking his second term in Congress.

Indian American Democrat Suhas Subramanyam has won re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives, representing Virginia’s 10th Congressional District. The incumbent secured a second term in Congress after a decisive victory over Republican challenger Dave T. Beckwith in the recent midterm elections.

Official results show Subramanyam garnered 63.16% of the vote, totaling 173,106 ballots, while Beckwith received 34.66%, or 94,990 votes. This outcome solidifies Subramanyam's position as a prominent Indian American voice within the House, particularly in a politically competitive Northern Virginia district.

From Houston to Public Service

Born in Houston, Texas, to Tamil physician parents who immigrated from India, 40-year-old Suhas Subramanyam initially pursued a path in law and public policy, diverging from his parents' medical careers. His early experiences, including organizing volunteers for Hurricane Katrina relief while at Tulane University, significantly shaped his commitment to public service.

After graduating from Tulane in 2008 with a philosophy degree and earning a law degree from Northwestern University’s Pritzker School of Law in 2013, Subramanyam embarked on a career in government. He worked for former U.S. Representative Suzanne Kosmas and served on the Senate Judiciary Committee staff. From 2015 to 2017, he advised former President Barack Obama’s White House Office of the Chief Technology Officer on technology policy.

A Rising Figure in Virginia Politics

Before his congressional tenure, Subramanyam established himself in Virginia state politics. He first won a seat in the Virginia House of Delegates in 2019, focusing on issues such as lowering toll and utility costs and making prescription drugs more affordable. He later served in the Virginia State Senate from 2023 to 2024, building a reputation as a policy-oriented Democrat.

His state-level experience proved instrumental in his successful 2024 campaign for Congress, where he became the first Indian American elected to Congress from the U.S. East Coast. In Washington, he has advocated for the South Asian diaspora and constituents across Northern Virginia, particularly on issues related to healthcare, immigration reform, technology policy, and support for veterans, senior citizens, and working families.

Significance of the Win

Suhas Subramanyam’s re-election is part of a broader trend of increasing Indian American representation in national elected office. His continued presence in the House reinforces the growing influence of the community in U.S. politics. As he begins his second term, Subramanyam is expected to continue his work within the Democratic Party’s technology and policy wing, representing a diverse suburban district.
