Akhilesh Yadav Hints at Not Contesting 2027 UP Elections, Citing 2012 CM Precedent

· · 2 min read

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav indicated he might not contest the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, preferring to become Chief Minister directly as he did in 2012. He stated he would remain a Lok Sabha MP, calling this strategy "auspicious."

Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav has suggested he may not contest the upcoming 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. Speaking to reporters in Varanasi, Yadav stated that he would instead take the oath as chief minister directly, while continuing his role as a Lok Sabha MP, a strategy he described as "auspicious."

A 'Propitious' Path to Chief Ministership

When questioned about potentially contesting from Varanasi, Yadav responded by invoking a previous political success. He highlighted that he first became Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh in 2012 without directly contesting an Assembly election, instead serving while a member of the Lok Sabha. Yadav, who currently represents Kannauj in the Lok Sabha, indicated he intends to follow this same path if the Samajwadi Party forms the government after the 2027 polls.

The Samajwadi Party leader's comments have sparked considerable speculation regarding the party's campaign strategy for the high-stakes state elections.

Varanasi Seat and BJP Criticism

During the interaction, when pressed on which seat the Samajwadi Party might contest in Varanasi, Yadav deflected the question, inviting the reporter to suggest a constituency. He reiterated his belief that the people of Kashi (Varanasi) possess the wisdom to discern between favorable and unfavorable political actions.

Yadav also took the opportunity to criticize the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), alleging that the party is preparing to deny tickets to approximately 200 sitting MLAs ahead of the 2027 elections. He specifically claimed that ministers from Kashi would be among the first to face such cuts. Regarding his own party's candidate selection, the SP president affirmed that candidates would be chosen based on their winning potential and local electability, making it a central criterion for seat distribution.

The 2012 Precedent

Akhilesh Yadav's first tenure as Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister began in 2012. At that time, he was a sitting Member of Parliament for Kannauj. He assumed the state's highest office without contesting a simultaneous Assembly election, a precedent he now cites as a blueprint for his potential return to the Chief Minister's chair in 2027.
