India Ends Physical OCI Booklets for New Applicants, Shifts to Digital e-OCI Cards

· · 2 min read

As of July 8, 2026, India has phased out physical Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) booklets for new applicants. All fresh registrations will now exclusively receive a digital e-OCI Card, streamlining the process.

New applicants for Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) status will now exclusively receive a digital e-OCI Card, as India formally ended the issuance of physical OCI booklets on July 8, 2026. The Bureau of Immigration confirmed this significant shift, marking a complete move to digital documentation for new registrations.

What This Means for New Applicants

From today, individuals applying for OCI status will no longer be issued a physical booklet. Instead, they will receive their e-OCI Card digitally and must download it. There will be no circumstances under which a physical document will be provided to new entrants into the scheme.

Impact on Existing OCI Cardholders

For those who already hold an OCI card, their physical booklets remain valid. However, carrying the physical document is no longer mandatory. The Bureau of Immigration has advised existing cardholders to download their digital e-OCI Card to their mobile phones. This digital version, along with a passport, will now be accepted at Immigration Check Posts and by participating airlines as the preferred form of identification.

Streamlined Application Process and Reduced Renewals

The entire OCI application process has been moved online, accessible through the official OCI Services portal. Physical visits to an Indian Mission, Post, or Foreigner Regional Registration Office are now only required for specific cases where a personal interview is mandated.

Notably, personal interviews are now compulsory only for applicants seeking OCI status based on marriage, as per Section 7A(1)(d) of the Citizenship Act, 1955. These interviews will be conducted during the document verification stage, and the application will only be acknowledged online after the interview has taken place. For all other categories, personal interviews have been eliminated.

The updated framework also significantly reduces the administrative burden on existing OCI cardholders. They are no longer required to renew their cards after obtaining a new passport at the ages of 20 or 50. Furthermore, updates to personal details such as name, nationality, or gender can now be made online without necessitating a card renewal.
