IIT Bombay Student Death: Professor Doolla Denies Casteist Remarks Amid Probe

· · 2 min read

Professor Suryanarayana Doolla denied making casteist remarks during questioning by Mumbai Crime Branch in the IIT Bombay student death case. He stated he acted strictly within institutional rules, as authorities investigate the circumstances of Sahil Wakode's death.

Mumbai Crime Branch investigators have questioned Professor Suryanarayana Doolla for several hours regarding the death of IIT Bombay student Sahil Wakode. During the extensive questioning session at the institute's Powai campus, Professor Doolla firmly denied all allegations of making casteist remarks or harassing the student, asserting that his actions were entirely in line with IIT Bombay's established rules and guidelines.

The Investigation into Sahil Wakode's Death

The case centers on the tragic death of Sahil Wakode, a second-year BTech student, who was discovered deceased in his hostel room on September 18, 2026. This incident occurred just hours after he was reportedly caught using a mobile phone during a mid-semester examination, where Professor Doolla was present.

Following Sahil's death, his family brought serious allegations against Professor Doolla, claiming Sahil had previously confided in them about experiencing caste-based discrimination and receiving casteist comments. These allegations prompted a comprehensive investigation by the Mumbai Crime Branch.

Professor Doolla's Stance and Institutional Response

In his statement to investigators, Professor Doolla reiterated his denial of any wrongdoing, emphasizing adherence to institutional protocols. Despite his denials, IIT Bombay had previously removed him from his position after the incident came to light.

The Mumbai Crime Branch has been meticulously gathering evidence, recording statements from approximately 40 individuals. These include Sahil's parents, fellow students, various IIT staff members, and hostel personnel. Additionally, Sahil's two mobile phones, laptop, and tablet have been sent for forensic analysis to uncover any crucial digital evidence.

Broader Actions and Protests

The Powai police registered a First Information Report (FIR) against Professor Doolla following a complaint lodged by Sahil's father, Ravindra Wakode. IIT Bombay has also initiated its own internal inquiry by forming a 10-member committee to thoroughly examine the circumstances surrounding the student's death.

Further escalating the matter, the National Commission for Scheduled Castes visited the institute on September 24 to investigate the caste discrimination allegations, issuing directives for the preservation of all relevant evidence. The ongoing investigation has also sparked protests, with Sahil's parents undertaking a hunger strike to demand justice and the arrest of Professor Doolla and IIT-B director Shireesh Kedare. A separate group of IIT Bombay students has also joined the agitation, initiating their own hunger strike to advocate for greater accountability from the institute's administration.
