The Gujarat government has announced a holiday for schools and colleges across several districts, including major cities like Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Anand, and Kheda. This decision follows an India Meteorological Department (IMD) Red Alert forecasting extremely heavy rainfall across the state.
The precautionary measure aims to ensure the safety of students and staff amidst converging weather systems that significantly increase the risk of widespread flooding, waterlogging, and disruption to daily life.
IMD Forecasts Extreme Rainfall
The IMD has issued a Red Alert for districts such as Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Anand, Kheda, Bharuch, Narmada, Chhota Udepur, Surat, Navsari, Valsad, Tapi, Dang, Bhavnagar, and Botad. These regions are expected to experience extremely heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds.
Weather authorities attribute this intense spell to the combined impact of a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal, an active monsoon trough, a shear zone, a western disturbance, and an offshore trough.
Educational Institutions Shut Down
In Ahmedabad, Collector Bhavya Verma issued an order for the closure of all government, grant-in-aid, and private primary, secondary, and higher secondary schools, as well as colleges, for July 31. The District Education Officer (DEO) subsequently directed all educational institutions to inform students, parents, and staff immediately via various communication channels.
Similarly, Vadodara District Collector Dr. Anil Dhameliya ordered the closure of anganwadis, schools, ITIs, coaching centers, polytechnic institutes, and colleges. The administration highlighted the IMD's forecast of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall with winds of 45-55 kmph, deeming it unsafe for student commute.
Kheda district authorities also announced the closure of all anganwadis, schools, colleges, and ITIs for both July 31 and August 1. District Magistrate N. V. Upadhyay stated this decision was made to prevent any incidents during the anticipated severe weather. Neighboring Anand district has also directed educational institutions to close, with Sardar Patel University postponing examinations scheduled for July 31.
Public Safety and Disaster Preparedness
Officials across Gujarat are urging residents to exercise extreme caution. Surat Municipal Commissioner M. Nagarajan confirmed that civic authorities have initiated preventive measures, including checking hoarding strength, lowering high-mast street lights, and closing certain roads in anticipation of strong winds and heavy rain.
District administrations have advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel, stay clear of waterlogged areas, electric poles, and trees during thunderstorms, and adhere to official weather advisories until conditions improve.
The Gujarat government has intensified disaster preparedness efforts in vulnerable districts. National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams have been strategically deployed, and emergency control rooms are active to monitor the evolving situation. Local administrations are closely tracking river water levels, inspecting flood-prone areas, and preparing evacuation plans for low-lying localities should rainfall intensify further.
