India's Young Motor Insurance Buyers Demand Flexibility, Digital Services Beyond Claims

· · 3 min read

Young Indian motor insurance buyers are increasingly prioritizing convenience, customization, and digital services alongside traditional claim settlement. This shift is driving insurers to offer flexible options like 'Pay As You Drive' and advanced tech for faster processing.

A new trend is emerging in India's motor insurance sector: young buyers are redefining their priorities, looking beyond just premium affordability and smooth claim settlements. According to Aditya Kumar, Head of Motor Underwriting at Digit Insurance, this demographic now places significant value on convenience, personalization, and seamless digital experiences.

Shifting Expectations in Motor Insurance

For years, motor insurance decisions in India were primarily driven by practical factors such as the cost of premiums, the mandatory nature of third-party coverage, and the expectation of efficient claim resolution. While these elements remain important, today's younger consumers, accustomed to the ease of digital transactions in banking and retail, expect similar simplicity and speed from their insurance providers.

They seek policies that are easy to understand, straightforward to purchase, and simple to manage, demanding less paperwork and faster service throughout the entire customer journey—from policy acquisition to post-accident vehicle repair.

Innovative Products and Add-ons

In response to these evolving demands, insurers are introducing more flexible and customized product offerings:

  • Pay As You Drive (PAYD) Policies: Unlike traditional policies, PAYD options allow customers to align their premium costs with their actual vehicle usage, often based on driving distance or chosen annual kilometer slabs. Some policies even offer top-up options for increased usage.
  • Tailored Add-on Covers: Buyers are seeking specific protections to enhance their standard policies, including:
    • Zero Depreciation Cover: Minimizes depreciation-related deductions on eligible claims.
    • Consumables Cover: Helps cover the cost of minor items like nuts, bolts, and screws typically excluded from standard policies.
    • Return to Invoice Cover: Provides coverage based on the vehicle's original invoice value in cases of total loss or theft.
    • Daily Conveyance Cover: Offers a temporary vehicle or daily allowance during repair periods.
    • Roadside Assistance, Tyre Protect, Key and Lock Protect, and Loss of Personal Belongings Cover: Provide comprehensive protection for various unforeseen events.

Technology Enhances the Claims Experience

Technology is also playing a crucial role in transforming the claims process. Insurers are leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) for faster and more efficient services. Tools like AI-enabled vehicle damage detection can quickly identify damaged panels, supporting quicker inspections. AI-driven repair recommendation systems assess whether parts should be repaired or replaced, potentially reducing approval timelines and preventing unnecessary replacements.

As Kumar notes, "The conversation is no longer limited to what happens during a claim; it now includes everything that happens before and after." This holistic view of the customer experience is becoming paramount.

The Future of Motor Insurance in India

For insurers, the challenge lies in seamlessly integrating flexible coverage options and digital convenience with transparent policy terms and reliable claims support. For India's young motor insurance buyers, evaluating both the breadth of protection offered and the overall service experience is now an increasingly vital part of their decision-making process when choosing a policy.
