The Indian government has officially approved the construction of a national memorial dedicated to Bharat Ratna Pranab Mukherjee, the nation's 13th President. This significant project will be located at the Rashtriya Smriti Sthal, a designated area within Delhi's historic Rajghat complex.
The decision to establish the memorial comes nearly six years after Mukherjee's passing in August 2020. The approval follows an earlier move in January 2025 by the Union government to reserve land specifically for this purpose, paving the way for construction to commence.
Honoring a Distinguished Statesman
Pranab Mukherjee served as India's President from 2012 to 2017, capping a remarkably long and illustrious career in public service. A seasoned parliamentarian and prominent leader of the Congress party, he held numerous crucial cabinet portfolios during his decades in government, including Finance, Defence, and External Affairs.
In recognition of his immense contributions to the nation, he was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honor, in 2019.
Location and Architectural Consistency
The Rashtriya Smriti Sthal at Rajghat is specifically reserved for commemorating former Presidents, Vice Presidents, and Prime Ministers of India. This ensures that Mukherjee's memorial will stand alongside those of other eminent national leaders, contributing to a unified national remembrance site.
Before receiving final clearance, the memorial proposal underwent review by the Delhi Urban Art Commission (DUAC). The commission suggested design modifications to ensure the new structure would harmonize with the existing architectural character of the Rajghat memorial precinct. These recommendations included removing certain elements, such as a proposed photograph installation and under-platform lighting, to maintain aesthetic uniformity.
Expanding the National Memorial Landscape
With this latest approval, the Pranab Mukherjee memorial will become another important addition to the Rashtriya Smriti complex. It will join memorials dedicated to other former Prime Ministers, such as Atal Bihari Vajpayee and P. V. Narasimha Rao, further enhancing the site's role as a solemn tribute to India's foremost constitutional leaders.
