The alert has prompted immediate and visible security measures across the city, including extensive checking drives at strategic locations.
Security Bolstered Across the Capital
In response to the intelligence warning, security has been visibly increased, particularly outside key political offices. The Delhi BJP state office and the BJP national headquarters have seen tightened security, with police personnel conducting thorough inspections and installing additional barricades. Sources indicate that security forces deployed at these critical locations themselves could be potential targets.
ISI-Linked Module Busted Weeks Prior
This high alert comes just weeks after the Delhi Police Special Cell successfully dismantled a terror module reportedly linked to Pakistani gangster-terror operative Shahzad Bhatti, who is believed to be operating under the direction of Pakistan's intelligence agency, ISI. Nine individuals were arrested in connection with this case.
During interrogations, it was revealed that members of the module had been actively planning targeted killings within Delhi. The alleged plot was extensive, involving reconnaissance at a prominent temple in the capital, with videos reportedly sent to handlers across the border. The module had allegedly plotted to target police and paramilitary personnel stationed at the temple, intending to open fire to create panic and chaos.
Specific Targets Identified
- A popular dhaba on the Delhi-Sonipat highway, known for its heavy daily footfall, was allegedly marked for a grenade attack to inflict maximum casualties.
- A military camp in Hisar was reportedly surveyed, and videos of the area were shared with cross-border handlers.
- Several police stations in Uttar Pradesh were also included on the module's target list.
Echoes of Past Terror Incidents
The current threat environment is set against a backdrop of escalating terror activity in the capital. Last year, police uncovered a Jaish-e-Mohammed-linked "white-collar terror module" following a deadly car blast near the Red Fort. That explosion, on November 10, killed 15 people and injured several others.
The Red Fort incident involved an explosives-laden i20 car driven by Dr. Umar Un Nabi. Investigations into that attack revealed a chilling network allegedly comprising radicalized doctors, college students, and administrative officials from Al Falah University, many of whom were arrested for their alleged links to or support of the suicide bomber.
