CM Vijay's TVK Pursues Solo Majority in Tamil Nadu, Congress Alliance at Risk

· · 3 min read

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Vijay's TVK party is actively working to secure an independent majority in the state assembly. With 107 MLAs, TVK needs 11 more, employing a strategy of opposition defections and by-elections, potentially sidelining coalition partner Congress.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Vijay and his party, the Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), are reportedly executing a strategic plan to achieve an independent majority in the state assembly. This ambitious move aims to reduce the party's reliance on coalition partners, particularly the Congress, which currently supports the TVK government.

TVK's Path to Majority

The TVK currently holds 107 seats in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly, requiring 118 for a clear majority. The party's strategy involves encouraging defections from opposition parties, particularly the AIADMK, and then having these defecting MLAs re-contest in by-elections under the TVK banner. This approach would allow the TVK to increase its seat count without alienating its existing coalition partners directly through internal shifts.

Key Developments and Maneuvers

  • MLA Resignations: Three AIADMK MLAs – K. Maragatham Kumaravel (Madurantakam), S. Jayakumar (Perundurai), and P. Sathyabama (Dharapuram) – have already resigned their assembly seats. These resignations are seen as an initial step, with reports suggesting that seven to eight more MLAs could follow suit in the coming days.
  • By-Elections: The vacated seats, including one previously held by CM Vijay himself, are slated for by-elections. If the TVK successfully fields and wins these seats with the defecting MLAs, their count would rise significantly. The goal is to reach 111 seats after the initial by-elections, further reducing the gap to the majority mark.
  • Rajya Sabha Entry: A by-election for a Rajya Sabha seat is scheduled for June 18, following CV Shanmugam's resignation. The TVK is reportedly considering nominating retired IAS officer U. Sagayam, known for his integrity, to this seat. This move is seen as a message to the public about CM Vijay's commitment to anti-corruption, implicitly targeting previous DMK and AIADMK administrations.
  • Public Welfare Initiatives: Amidst these political shifts, CM Vijay has announced significant public welfare measures, including waiving crop loans of up to ₹50,000 for farmers from cooperative banks, with large farmers also receiving a ₹5,000 relief.

Reducing Dependence on Allies

Senior TVK leaders reportedly believe that a party built around a charismatic leader like Joseph Vijay should not be dependent on post-election alliances for extended periods. The current coalition includes five Congress MLAs, whose support would become less critical as TVK's independent strength grows.

This political maneuvering draws comparisons to similar strategies seen in other Indian states, such as the BJP's 'Operation Lotus' tactics in Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh, or Arvind Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party's eventual solo majority in Delhi after an initial coalition. While the political dynamics differ, the underlying objective of consolidating power and governing independently remains consistent.

The coming months, particularly with the scheduled by-elections, will be crucial in determining whether CM Vijay's TVK can achieve its goal of a solo majority in Tamil Nadu, fundamentally reshaping the state's political landscape.
