BJP to Form First West Bengal Government May 9; CM Candidate Yet to Be Named

· · 2 min read

The BJP is set to form its first government in West Bengal, with the swearing-in ceremony scheduled for May 9 at Brigade Parade Ground. The party has not yet announced its chief ministerial candidate, though Suvendu Adhikari is a leading contender.

West Bengal is on the cusp of a significant political transformation as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) prepares to establish its inaugural government in the state. The swearing-in ceremony is slated for May 9 at 10 AM, taking place at Kolkata's iconic Brigade Parade Ground.

Leadership Still Undecided

Despite the imminent government formation, the BJP has yet to officially declare its Chief Ministerial candidate. Discussions within the party reportedly point towards Leader of the Opposition, Suvendu Adhikari, as a prominent frontrunner. Adhikari, a former close associate of Mamata Banerjee, famously defeated her in both the 2021 and 2026 assembly elections in Nandigram and Bhabanipur, respectively.

Other names being considered include state BJP president Samik Bhattacharya, Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar, and former Rajya Sabha MP Swapan Dasgupta. Party insiders suggest a strong inclination towards selecting a “bhumiputra” or “son of the soil” candidate, aligning with the campaign rhetoric of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who emphasized that Bengal's Chief Minister would be someone born and educated in the state.

Historic Electoral Breakthrough

The BJP's victory marks the end of the Trinamool Congress's (TMC) uninterrupted 15-year rule in West Bengal. In the recently concluded assembly elections, the BJP secured 207 out of 294 seats, representing its most substantial electoral achievement in a state where it previously struggled to establish a strong foothold.

Ceremony Details and Cultural Significance

The oath-taking ceremony is expected to draw a host of national dignitaries, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP President Nitin Nabin, several Union ministers, and Chief Ministers from BJP and NDA-ruled states.

Significantly, the ceremony coincides with Rabindra Jayanti, the 25th day of Baisakh, which marks the birth anniversary of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore. This timing, according to party leaders, is a deliberate effort to intertwine the political event with Bengal's rich cultural identity. The BJP has consistently used figures like Swami Vivekananda, Subhas Chandra Bose, and Syama Prasad Mookerjee in its outreach efforts within the state.

Path Ahead

A crucial meeting of the newly elected BJP MLAs is scheduled for the evening of May 8. It is anticipated that the party leadership will finalize the Chief Ministerial selection during or immediately after this meeting. The event at Brigade Parade Ground is poised to be a landmark moment in West Bengal's political history, signifying the BJP's ascent from a regional challenger to the ruling power.
