BJP Secures Stunning Win in Falta Repoll; TMC's Khan Finishes Fourth in Banerjee's Stronghold

· · 3 min read

The BJP achieved a significant victory in the Falta Assembly repoll in West Bengal, with candidate Debangshu Panda winning by over 109,000 votes. This outcome marks a major setback for the Trinamool Congress, as TMC nominee Jahangir Khan, a close aide to Abhishek Banerjee, finished a distant fourth in the party's former stronghold.

KOLKATA, West Bengal – In a dramatic political upset, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has secured a landslide victory in the Falta Assembly constituency repoll, a region long considered a bastion of the Trinamool Congress (TMC). BJP candidate Debangshu Panda won by an overwhelming margin of 109,021 votes, dealing a significant blow to the TMC and its influential leader, Abhishek Banerjee, whose Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha constituency encompasses Falta.

The Election Commission announced that Panda garnered 149,666 votes. In contrast, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) candidate, Sambhu Nath Kurmi, secured second place with 40,645 votes. The Congress party's Abdur Razzak Molla finished third with 10,084 votes. Most notably, TMC nominee Jahangir Khan, a close associate of Abhishek Banerjee, managed only 7,783 votes, placing him fourth in a constituency the party had dominated for over two decades.

A Crumbling Fortress in West Bengal

The result represents a stark reversal for the Trinamool Congress. In the 2021 Assembly election, TMC's Sankar Kumar Naskar won Falta comfortably with 117,179 votes. Just five years later, the party that once commanded such support found itself relegated to fourth place. This outcome is particularly significant given Falta’s location within the Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha constituency, which is represented by Abhishek Banerjee, considered a key political stronghold for him.

The repoll for the Falta Assembly seat was necessitated after the Election Commission annulled the original April 29 election due to widespread allegations of Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) tampering and other irregularities. The fresh poll, held on May 21, saw a robust voter turnout, with over 87 percent of the 2.36 lakh electorate casting their ballots.

BJP Celebrates, TMC Faces Scrutiny

This setback for the TMC follows the BJP's impressive performance in the broader 2026 West Bengal Assembly election, where the BJP secured 207 seats, reducing the Trinamool Congress to 80. The Falta victory now pushes the BJP's tally to 208 seats.

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari of the BJP wasted no time in criticizing the Trinamool Congress and Abhishek Banerjee. In a post on X, Adhikari declared, "The notorious 'Diamond Harbour' model has turned into the 'Trinamool's Loss-Bar' model." He expressed gratitude to the voters of Falta, noting that the victory margin exceeded the one lakh votes he had appealed for during his campaign. Adhikari also alleged that TMC's past dominance in the constituency was maintained through the "misuse of state machinery and intimidation," suggesting that the latest results reflect a truer public sentiment now that voters could cast their ballots freely.

For the BJP, the Falta bypoll is more than just an additional seat; it symbolizes a potential shift in the political landscape of West Bengal. For the Trinamool Congress, it serves as a sobering reminder of how quickly a long-held political fortress can crumble, particularly in the perceived backyard of one of its most prominent leaders.
