The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has demonstrated a strong performance in Rajasthan's recent local body elections, securing control over several crucial municipal corporations. The results, announced on September 14, 2026, show the BJP gaining outright majorities in Jaipur, Kota, Udaipur, and Bhilwara, marking a significant win for the ruling party in the state.
A notable outcome of these elections is the BJP's victory in Kota, where the party won 53 out of 100 wards. This result holds particular weight as Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had launched his nationwide student outreach initiative, 'Chhatron Ki Goonj,' from Kota on June 17. BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi highlighted this, suggesting it indicated a rejection of Congress's narrative and a growing public endorsement for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma.
Mixed Results for Congress and Independents
While the BJP celebrated widespread gains, the Congress managed to secure a clear victory in Bikaner. However, the party faces a more complex situation in other cities. In Ajmer and Pali, the Congress holds a lead but falls short of a majority, meaning the final mayoral outcomes will depend heavily on the support of independent councilors.
Contests in other regions also saw varied results. In Udaipur, the BJP secured 53 out of 80 wards, and in Bhilwara, they won 45 of 70 wards. Jaipur also saw the BJP take a lead over the Congress. Jodhpur experienced a tight race, with both the BJP and Congress winning 44 wards each, leaving the remaining 10 to independents. Bharatpur presented a unique scenario, with independents winning or leading in 36 of its 65 wards, overshadowing both major parties.
Mayoral Picture and Party Interpretations
The BJP is positioned to control the mayoral offices in Jaipur, Kota, Udaipur, and Bhilwara, while the Congress has a clear path in Bikaner. However, the final mayoral picture for Ajmer, Pali, Alwar, Jodhpur, and Bharatpur will remain uncertain until independents declare their support, with official mayoral winners expected to be clear by September 21.
BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi emphasized that these results not only signify a "splendid victory" but also indicate the party's expanding social and geographical footprint across Rajasthan. He further criticized the previous Congress government for conducting local body polls in eight phases, contrasting it with the current BJP government's single-phase approach. Trivedi also asserted that voters rejected the policy of dividing municipal corporations, a move implemented by the prior administration.
