A motorcyclist in Arunachal Pradesh miraculously escaped death on June 28 when a sudden landslide swept him and his bike down a rain-damaged mountain road. The dramatic incident, captured on video, occurred in Siji, Lower Siang district, amidst relentless monsoon rains that have made the region's roads highly vulnerable.
The viral footage shows the biker cautiously navigating a narrow, mud-covered stretch of hillside road. Without warning, the unstable slope gave way, sending a large mass of earth and rocks collapsing beneath him. Both the rider and his motorcycle were dragged downhill with the debris, eventually spilling into the Siji River below.
Landslide Chokes Siji River, Evacuation Ordered
Beyond the individual's narrow escape, the landslide has created a significant environmental and safety crisis. The massive collapse at the Siji-Magi Block Point completely choked off the Siji River, forming a volatile natural dam of debris. This blockage poses a severe threat of flash flooding.
In response to the imminent danger, the Lower Siang district administration has issued an urgent public advisory. Residents living along both banks of the Siji River have been directed to evacuate to safer locations immediately. Officials fear a catastrophic structural failure of the debris wall, which could unleash a powerful flash flood with zero warning.
Downstream Threat Extends to Assam
The potential impact of this natural dam extends beyond Arunachal Pradesh. The Siji River flows directly downstream into Assam’s Dhemaji district, where it is known as the Gai Nadi. A sudden collapse of the debris wall could pose an immediate threat to lives, livestock, homes, bridges, and public infrastructure across this downstream corridor.
