Basti Students Block MLA's Convoy Over Muddy School Road, Demand Immediate Action

· · 3 min read

Students in Uttar Pradesh's Basti district blocked Samajwadi Party MLA Rajendra Chaudhary's convoy, protesting the severely muddy and waterlogged road to their school. Heavy monsoon rains had rendered the route impassable, prompting their demand for immediate civic action.

In a direct appeal for improved infrastructure, a group of schoolchildren in Uttar Pradesh’s Basti district halted the convoy of local Samajwadi Party MLA Rajendra Chaudhary. The students were protesting the dilapidated condition of the road leading to their schools, which had become a treacherous muddy mess due to recent heavy monsoon rainfall.

Students Confront MLA Over Impassable Route

The incident occurred in the Rudhauli area as students were returning from their classes. Instead of allowing the MLA's convoy to pass unimpeded, the children courageously approached the vehicles, voicing their frustrations about the hazardous road conditions that significantly complicate their daily commute. They reportedly led MLA Chaudhary to the affected stretch, demonstrating the deep waterlogging and thick mud.

The students explained that the monsoon season consistently turns the brick-paved canal road into an impassable bog. Many reported slipping and falling, leading to dirty and wet uniforms and footwear as they struggled to wade through the dirty water to reach their educational institutions.

MLA Assures Intervention

Following the students' compelling protest, MLA Rajendra Chaudhary engaged with the children, listening to their concerns. He subsequently contacted officials from the relevant departments, urging them to investigate the problem and take prompt action. Chaudhary assured the students that efforts would be made to rectify the situation, after which his convoy was allowed to proceed.

Critical Artery for Local Education

The road at the heart of the dispute is a vital canal route under Saryu Canal Division-4. It serves as a crucial link for several areas, including Mudadiha alias Bhopalpur and Hanumanganj. Hundreds of students rely on this path daily to access multiple schools, including an intermediate college, a government upper primary school, and a primary school in the region.

Despite having a brick-paved surface, the persistent rainfall during the monsoon months causes significant water accumulation, transforming sections of the road into a challenging and often dangerous passage for pedestrians, particularly children.

Spotlight on Civic Neglect

While the MLA's immediate assurance brought attention to the issue, reports from August 20 indicated that permanent repair work had not yet commenced. The incident underscores persistent civic infrastructure challenges, particularly the lack of adequate drainage and road maintenance in rural areas, which frequently disrupt access to essential services like education during the monsoon season. The students' direct action has successfully placed the condition of the Hanumanganj canal road firmly on the administration's radar, highlighting the importance of responsive local governance.
