· · 2 min read

Banda, Uttar Pradesh, recorded a scorching 48.2°C for the third consecutive day, making it India's hottest city. The IMD has issued a red alert across several districts as severe heatwave conditions persist.

Banda, a district in Uttar Pradesh, has emerged as India's hottest city for the third consecutive day, registering a blistering 48.2 degrees Celsius. This extreme temperature has prompted the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a red alert for numerous districts across the state, warning residents of severe heatwave conditions.

Intense Conditions Across Uttar Pradesh

The persistent heatwave in Uttar Pradesh has seen temperatures soar significantly above normal levels. Banda's recorded 48.2°C on the third day follows previous highs of 47.6°C and 46.4°C, underscoring the severity and persistence of the heat. Meteorologists indicate that temperatures in many affected districts are expected to remain 3-4 degrees Celsius above their seasonal averages.

The IMD's red alert covers a wide area, including:

  • Banda
  • Chitrakoot
  • Prayagraj
  • Fatehpur
  • Agra
  • Firozabad
  • Etawah
  • Hamirpur
  • Jalaun
  • Mahoba
  • Jhansi

Additional severe heatwave warnings have been issued for districts such as Kaushambi, Pratapgarh, Chandauli, Varanasi, Ballia, Kanpur Dehat, Kanpur City, Rae Bareli, Auraiya, and Lalitpur.

Health Warnings and Regional Impact

Officials have cautioned that the Bundelkhand region and southern Uttar Pradesh are particularly vulnerable to the heatwave's harshest impacts. Strong, dry afternoon winds combined with extreme daytime temperatures are creating hazardous conditions, especially for outdoor workers, children, and the elderly.

Mohammad Danish, a senior scientist at the Meteorological Centre, stated, “Heatwave to severe heatwave conditions are likely to prevail during the day in many parts of the southern part of the state and in other regions. Nights will also remain unusually hot in some areas, reducing chances of relief after sunset.”

The state capital, Lucknow, is also bracing for intense heat, with forecasts predicting maximum temperatures between 43°C and 45°C. Nighttime temperatures are expected to remain high, likely exceeding 30°C, offering little respite. The absence of significant rainfall means heat discomfort is projected to continue well into the evenings.

National Capital Region Also Affected

Neighboring areas within the National Capital Region (NCR) are experiencing similar severe conditions. Noida anticipates temperatures near 45°C, with minimums around 31°C. Ghaziabad is expected to see comparable highs of approximately 45°C and lows near 30°C. Dry weather, intense sunlight, and hot surface winds are contributing to substantial heat stress across these regions, with strong winds expected throughout the day.

Warm night conditions are also forecast to persist in western Uttar Pradesh for the next two days, further highlighting the widespread nature of this intense heatwave.
