Auto Driver K Vijay Dhamu Stuns Former Minister Jayakumar in Royapuram Election Upset

· · 2 min read

In a remarkable 'David vs. Goliath' victory, auto driver K Vijay Dhamu of TVK unseated five-time MLA and former finance minister D Jayakumar in Tamil Nadu's Royapuram constituency. Dhamu secured over 55,000 votes, winning by a margin of 14,000.

Chennai, Tamil Nadu – In one of the most significant upsets of the 2026 Tamil Nadu election results, K Vijay Dhamu, an auto driver and first-time candidate for the TVK party, has defeated veteran politician D Jayakumar in the Royapuram constituency. Jayakumar, a former finance minister and five-time MLA for the AIADMK, had held the seat since 1991, making Dhamu's victory a symbolic blow to the established political order.

A Grassroots Victory in Royapuram

Vijay Dhamu, who earns his living driving an auto-rickshaw, secured more than 55,000 votes, surpassing his nearest rival by a substantial margin of 14,000. D Jayakumar finished a distant third with just over 18,000 votes. The DMK's Subair Khan, son of late minister Rahman Khan, came in second, but could not stem the tide of support for the TVK debutant.

Dhamu's campaign leveraged his identity as a common man, deeply involved with the Vijay Makkal Iyakkam, actor Vijay's fan club network, for many years. He emphasized his long-standing work on the ground, connecting with local communities long before receiving a party ticket. A poignant image of Dhamu, tearful, embracing TVK chief Vijay during the candidate announcement became a defining symbol of the party's grassroots surge.

The Thalapathy Factor and Local Resonance

The TVK's strategic approach saw party leader Vijay position himself as the primary face across all constituencies, lending his star power to local candidates like Dhamu. This strategy allowed candidates to maintain a strong focus on local issues while benefiting from the broader appeal of the party chief.

Dhamu's manifesto specifically addressed the needs of Royapuram's coastal community, promising modernized infrastructure and enhanced social security for the fishing population. This targeted approach resonated strongly with voters, contributing significantly to his unexpected win.

Implications for Tamil Nadu's Political Landscape

The loss of Royapuram is particularly stinging for the AIADMK, marking the end of three decades of dominance for D Jayakumar in the seat. For the DMK, the outcome highlights the risks of last-minute strategic shifts; their decision to replace sitting MLA Idream R Murthy with Subair Khan ultimately did not yield the desired results.

This election result underscores a significant shift in Tamil Nadu politics, demonstrating the potential for new faces and grassroots movements, backed by popular figures, to challenge and overcome long-entrenched political powerhouses.
