Annamalai's Discontent with Alliance Strategy
Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader K. Annamalai has reportedly conveyed to the party's top brass his intention to resign, expressing strong dissatisfaction with the BJP's alliance strategy in Tamil Nadu. Sources indicate that Annamalai met with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP national president Nitin Nabin, and BJP national general secretary (organisation) BL Santosh in New Delhi, where he articulated his concerns.
Annamalai argued that the BJP's decision to rejoin forces with the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) before the 2026 Assembly polls severely undermined the party's long-term growth prospects and independent identity in the state. He believes this strategic move led to a significant decline in the BJP's electoral performance.
Declining Electoral Performance
Under Annamalai's leadership, the BJP had seen its vote share increase from 3.6 percent in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections to 11.2 percent in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. However, he reportedly highlighted that after contesting the 2026 Assembly elections as a junior partner in the AIADMK-led alliance, the party's vote share plummeted to below 3 percent, despite securing one seat.
This sharp decline, Annamalai contended, demonstrated that relying on regional allies like the AIADMK diluted the BJP's ambition to emerge as a formidable independent political force in Tamil Nadu. He has reportedly turned down various offers from the high command, including a Rajya Sabha seat, underscoring the depth of his discontent.
BJP Leadership's Reluctance and Future Steps
While Annamalai verbally expressed his wish to resign, the BJP leadership has not accepted his resignation and has requested him to wait. Party insiders acknowledge that Annamalai's potential departure would be a substantial setback for the BJP's long-term plans in Tamil Nadu, where he has been credited with energizing the cadre base and significantly increasing the party's visibility.
Potential New Political Venture
Sources close to the leader suggest that Annamalai is considering launching his own political outfit, which would be positioned with a nationalist stance. This move would mark a significant shift in Tamil Nadu's political landscape and could further complicate the BJP's efforts to expand its footprint in the southern state.
