Why Modi Urges 'Swadeshi' Despite 7.8% Growth: Vembu Explains India's Forex Need

· · 3 min read

Amidst India's 7.8% GDP growth, Prime Minister Modi has called for 'swadeshi' practices, urging citizens to limit foreign travel and gold purchases. Zoho founder Sridhar Vembu clarifies this strategy, likening it to East Asian nations conserving foreign exchange during rapid economic expansion.

Despite India's robust economic growth of 7.8% in the April-June quarter, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has advocated for a 'swadeshi' approach, encouraging citizens to reduce foreign travel, avoid purchasing gold, and opt for domestic wedding venues. This directive raised questions among many, prompting Zoho founder and chief scientist Sridhar Vembu to offer an economic explanation via social media.

The Rationale Behind Forex Conservation

Vembu highlighted that India's current economic strategy mirrors phases experienced by rapidly growing East Asian economies such as Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, and China. These nations, despite their impressive GDP growth, prioritized conserving foreign exchange to fuel their long-term development goals.

India's Import Dependence and Growth

The core of Vembu's explanation lies in India's significant import dependence, particularly in crucial sectors like energy and advanced technology. He noted that accelerated economic growth inherently increases the demand for these imported goods and services.

"If economy is growing at 7.8% why is the PM asking us not to travel abroad, not to buy gold, not to have foreign weddings etc" Let me explain: East Asian nations (Japan, Taiwan, South Korea and later China) all went through a phase of rapid GDP growth combined with the need to conserve foreign exchange.

To offset this dependence and ensure sustainable growth, India needs to boost its exports. However, even exports often require advanced technological inputs – such as precision machinery, materials, CPUs, GPUs, and sophisticated software – which India largely imports today.

Investing in Future Self-Sufficiency

Vembu emphasized that building competence in these advanced technological areas and achieving energy independence is a long-term endeavor, often taking decades. During this transitional period, conserving foreign exchange becomes critical. He drew an analogy to a fast-growing company that needs to conserve capital to invest in its future expansion and capabilities.

This strategy allows the nation to allocate its foreign currency reserves towards essential imports that contribute to industrial growth and technological advancement, rather than discretionary spending abroad.

India's Economic Resilience

The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation's announcement of 7.8% growth confirmed India's position as the world's fastest-growing major economy. This performance surpassed the Reserve Bank of India's forecast of 7% for the quarter, underscoring the strength of domestic economic activity even amidst global uncertainties, including geopolitical risks that could impact energy prices and global demand.

Ultimately, Vembu's insights suggest that Prime Minister Modi's call for 'swadeshi' is a strategic move to strengthen India's economic foundations and reduce external vulnerabilities, paving the way for sustained, self-reliant growth.
