Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently highlighted the inspiring work of Akash Gupta, a 21-year-old from Basti, Uttar Pradesh, during his 'Mann Ki Baat' address. Gupta was lauded for spearheading a remarkable community-driven campaign to restore the Manorama River, transforming a severely polluted stretch into a cleaner, healthier water body.
A Local Initiative for a Global Cause
Akash Gupta, who completed his education up to Class 12, initiated the cleanup after witnessing the deteriorating condition of the river he had grown up beside. Instead of waiting for official intervention, he mobilized a small group of friends, arming themselves with basic tools like nets, baskets, and spades to tackle the monumental task.
Overcoming Significant Challenges
The cleanup operation was far from easy. Gupta and his dedicated team committed four to five hours daily to remove vast quantities of plastic waste, water hyacinth, bottles, and other debris. They often faced ridicule from some locals and worked under difficult and hazardous conditions, risking injuries from broken glass and contaminated water. Despite these setbacks, their determination never wavered.
- Initial phase: Over 500 kilograms of waste removed.
- Subsequent efforts: Nearly 700 kilograms more extracted.
- Daily peak: Up to 50-60 kilograms of waste cleared in a single day.
Visible Impact and Renewed Hope
The results of Gupta's 39-day campaign have been profound. The team successfully removed more than 1,200 kilograms of garbage from the Manorama River. This significant effort has led to a visible revitalization of the waterway. Today, residents along the riverbanks are once again utilizing parts of the river for daily activities, and local wildlife is seen drinking from the cleaner waters.
Beyond the physical cleanup, the initiative has also significantly increased public awareness about proper waste disposal and environmental conservation throughout the region. Gupta's story stands as a powerful testament to how determined local action can indeed lead to meaningful and widespread change.
