The 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections are generating considerable political buzz, with exit poll projections indicating a potentially strong debut for actor Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). While the ruling DMK-led alliance, headed by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, is largely expected to retain power, TVK's entry appears to have significantly altered the electoral landscape.
TVK Emerges as a Potential Disruptor
MDMK chief Vaiko, an ally of the DMK, commented on TVK's performance, stating it would be "a force to reckon with" and might "produce surprises." He highlighted the possibility of a substantial swing among students and first-time voters towards the actor-politician's new party. This sentiment underscores the growing anticipation around Vijay's foray into electoral politics, drawing comparisons to past actor-turned-leaders like C.N. Annadurai and M.G. Ramachandran.
Varied Exit Poll Projections
Several surveys offer different outlooks on the election results. P-Marq and Matrize project the DMK+ alliance to secure between 122 and 132 seats in the 234-member Assembly, with the AIADMK-led alliance winning 87–100 seats. These polls suggest TVK could secure around 10–12 seats, a notable performance for a new party.
Peoples Pulse presents a stronger showing for the DMK+, estimating 125–145 seats, while placing AIADMK+ at 65–80 seats. Crucially, Peoples Pulse projects TVK to gain an even more substantial 18 to 24 seats.
However, not all projections align. JVC has predicted a potential comeback for the AIADMK, forecasting 128–147 seats for the party and its allies. Most notably, Axis My India's projections offer a highly divergent scenario, estimating 98–120 seats for TVK. If realized, such a result would transform the election into an unprecedented three-way contest, challenging Tamil Nadu's traditionally bipolar political structure.
Vaiko acknowledged the wide variations in exit poll results, advising caution against drawing premature conclusions.
"Exit polls don’t follow a single trend. Some say DMK will form the government, another favours AIADMK, and one even suggests TVK could come to power. We have to wait and see," he remarked.
Dravidian Movement's Enduring Strength
Despite the immediate electoral uncertainties, Vaiko emphasized the lasting influence of the Dravidian movement in Tamil Nadu. He asserted that its foundations, built on sacrifice and struggle, would remain a permanent force in the state, untouchable by external political forces like the BJP.
Voting for the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections concluded on April 23, with the final results expected on May 4. The DMK-led alliance seeks a second consecutive term, while the AIADMK aims for a significant comeback. All eyes are now on the official vote count to confirm the impact of TVK's highly anticipated debut.
