AAP Sees 10-Fold Gujarat Gains Despite Surat Setback in Local Elections

· · 2 min read

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) significantly expanded its presence in Gujarat's local body elections, increasing its seat tally tenfold to over 650. This surge came despite a sharp decline in Surat, where the party lost most of its seats.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has reported a significant expansion of its presence across Gujarat's local body elections, achieving a tenfold increase in its seat tally. While facing a notable setback in Surat, the party's overall performance signals a growing footprint in the state's political landscape.

AAP's Statewide Gains Outpace Surat Setback

According to AAP, its seat count surged from 69 in the previous election cycle to over 650 in the recent local polls. This substantial growth reflects gains in urban, rural, and tribal regions throughout Gujarat, positioning AAP as a more prominent challenger to the long-dominant Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The most pronounced reverse for AAP occurred in Surat, a city where it previously held 27 municipal seats. In the latest elections, the party was reduced to just four seats, as the BJP further solidified its control over the city's administration.

Key Victories and Challenges

  • Despite the Surat loss, AAP secured a symbolic breakthrough by winning the Narmada district panchayat, the only one not claimed by the BJP out of 34 in the state.
  • In the tribal belt of Dediapada, AAP demonstrated strong performance, clinching all 11 district panchayat seats.
  • The party also reported victories in more than 10 taluka panchayats, including a decisive win of 10 out of 16 seats in Bagasara taluka panchayat within Amreli district.

Isudan Gadhvi of AAP acknowledged the mixed results, stating, "The Aam Aadmi Party has seen an increase of almost 10 times in its seats. Last time, we won 69 seats, and according to the current trends, we are winning approximately 650 seats." He also emphasized the party's success in Narmada and other areas despite alleged pressure on workers.

BJP Retains Dominance, Congress Struggles

The Bharatiya Janata Party maintained its overwhelming dominance across Gujarat, successfully retaining control of all 15 municipal corporations and 33 of the state's 34 district panchayats. In Ahmedabad, for instance, the BJP secured 146 out of 192 seats, illustrating its continued strong hold.

Meanwhile, the Indian National Congress failed to secure control of any district panchayat, further highlighting the BJP's formidable position and AAP's emerging role as a significant, albeit regional, political force.
