Zoho's Sridhar Vembu: AI Boosts Developer Productivity 50%, Could Reach 10x

· · 2 min read

Zoho co-founder Sridhar Vembu states AI is already increasing developer productivity by 30-50% across the product lifecycle. He projects potential gains of up to 10 times as the technology advances, shifting the developer's role towards industry-specific knowledge.

Artificial intelligence is profoundly transforming software development, with Zoho co-founder and chief scientist Sridhar Vembu reporting significant gains in developer productivity. Vembu indicated that AI tools are already boosting efficiency by 30 to 50 percent across various stages of the product release lifecycle.

Future Productivity Gains and Role Shifts

During an interaction with CNBC-TV18, Vembu projected that these productivity improvements are just the beginning. He anticipates that AI could eventually make software developers four to five times more productive, with a long-term potential to reach as much as a tenfold increase as the technology matures and becomes more sophisticated.

This rise in AI capabilities is also expected to redefine the role of software developers. As AI takes on a greater share of coding and routine tasks, Vembu believes that domain knowledge and a deep understanding of specific industries will become increasingly crucial for developers. Their focus will shift towards crafting applications tailored to particular business requirements and sectors, demanding a blend of technical skill and industry insight.

Zoho's Expanding AI and Vertical SaaS Portfolio

Zoho has been actively expanding its own artificial intelligence offerings in response to these industry shifts. The company recently introduced Zia Chat, an AI-powered conversational interface designed to help employees efficiently search for information, grasp business contexts, and execute tasks across various applications.

Furthermore, Zoho has strategically entered the vertical software-as-a-service (SaaS) market. Their specialized offerings now cater to seven distinct sectors, including retail, automotive, banking and financial services, healthcare, education, real estate, and restaurants. This expansion underscores Zoho's commitment to integrating AI into industry-specific solutions and adapting to the evolving landscape of software development and deployment.
